Liverpool will face the reigning champions Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 as the league phase draws were revealed at the Grimaldi Forum on Thursday, August 29.

Apart from hosting Real Madrid, Liverpool will also meet their former midfielder, Xabi Alonso, when they take on Bayer Leverkusen in their third fixture. Notably, The Reds have locked horns with six of their opponents earlier in the past. However, this will be the first time, they will take on Bologna and Girona.

The new Champions League format for the 2024-25 season introduces a significant shift from the traditional group stage to a league phase, featuring 36 teams - An increase from the previous 32.

Instead of the former group stage, where teams faced three opponents twice (home and away), the league phase now has each team drawn against eight different opponents. Each team will play four home matches and four away matches, ensuring a diverse range of matchups.

The top eight teams from this league phase will automatically advance to the round of 16. Teams that finish between ninth and 24th place will move on to a knockout playoff stage, where they will compete for the remaining eight spots in the round of 16. Meanwhile, the bottom 12 teams will be eliminated from the competition.

The dates and times of each team's fixtures will be announced on Saturday. The final will be held at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday, May 31.
