Liverpool's Comeback Win Against Southampton Shows Championship Qualities, Says Salah

Mohamed Salah emphasises Liverpool's resilience in their 3-1 comeback victory over Southampton, highlighting their championship qualities despite a lacklustre first half. The win solidifies their position at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool's recent victory over Southampton showcased their resilience, a trait Mohamed Salah associates with champions. Despite not performing at their best, Liverpool secured a 3-1 win at Anfield. This triumph extended their lead to 16 points over Arsenal, who have two games in hand. Salah's two penalties in the second half were crucial in overturning a 1-0 deficit.

Arsenal still have opportunities to close the gap with upcoming matches against Manchester United and Chelsea. However, Arne Slot's team requires only 16 more points to clinch the title. After the match, Salah commented on Liverpool's performance, saying: "Yeah, because I don't think we played well today. Maybe in the second half, we played a little bit better, but [in the] first half, we didn't play well at all."

Salah Praises Liverpool's Championship Qualities

Salah highlighted that winning such challenging games is essential for success in major leagues like the Premier League and Champions League. Reflecting on the manager's halftime talk, Salah noted: "There was a bit of frustration. The manager, his head. He was going for us! But that's something you need sometimes." He acknowledged that Liverpool's experience helped them manage difficult situations effectively.

Salah's successful penalties brought his tally to nine this season without missing any, equalling Cole Palmer’s record from 2023-24. His overall contribution this season includes 27 goals and 17 assists, matching the highest goal involvements in a 38-game Premier League season.

With his latest goal, Salah reached his 184th Premier League goal, tying with Sergio Aguero as the fifth-highest scorer in league history. Expressing his delight at this achievement, Salah said: "I knew about the record, but I didn't think about it while I was playing... I'm happy about that, and I'm happy about the win as well."

Southampton manager Ivan Juric expressed dissatisfaction with Liverpool’s first penalty decision when Will Smallbone fouled Darwin Nunez. Juric told BBC Sport: "I think the first penalty was not a penalty and that changed the match." Despite this setback, he praised his team's performance and determination.

Juric emphasised Southampton's positive moments during the first half and expressed satisfaction with their overall play despite losing. He stated: "We have lots of young players who want to grow up and improve... We can lose games but we have to fight like we fought today."
