Liverpool Mentality Under Scrutiny As Slot Defends Players After 4-2 Defeat To Aston Villa

Liverpool’s hopes of sealing Champions League qualification suffered a major setback with a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa, yet Arne Slot insisted the mentality of the squad remained intact. Both sides knew victory at Villa Park would guarantee a top-four finish, but Unai Emery’s team took control and secured a deserved win.

Ollie Watkins scored twice for Villa, while Morgan Rogers and John McGinn added curling strikes that exposed Liverpool’s defence. Virgil van Dijk replied with two goals of his own, yet Liverpool still finished well beaten as Emery became the first Aston Villa manager to reach the European Cup or Champions League in two separate seasons.

Liverpool mentality under scrutiny after Villa loss

The result confirmed Aston Villa’s place in next season’s Champions League, regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s Europa League final against Freiburg. Liverpool, meanwhile, might still have to beat Brentford on the final day to qualify, with the situation dependent on other Premier League results involving their top-four rivals.

Defensive problems again damaged Liverpool’s chances. The team has now allowed 52 league goals this season, the first time Liverpool have ever conceded 50 or more in a single Premier League campaign. The four goals at Villa Park also matched the heaviest league concession of Slot’s coaching career since September 2022.

Slot addressed questions about the players’ mindset after the game, acknowledging a fragile spell yet defending their overall approach. "You are referring to the period where we struggled after the goal for 2-1, but overall, I don't think the players deserve what you are saying," Slot said. "They did cope with this difficult away game and were fully in the game and able to maybe get a result. But I agree with you, after the 2-1, we crumbled, we struggled. In the end, we came back to 4-2, so they did not give up, but we struggled to control their pace, intensity and quality."

The defeat extended a worrying trend for Liverpool against direct rivals. Liverpool are winless in their last six Premier League matches against teams who started the day inside the top five. That sequence stands at one draw and five losses, stretching back to a 1-0 home victory over Arsenal on matchday three.

Slot accepted that Liverpool’s defensive numbers have become a major barrier to success, while also noting issues in attack. "We've definitely conceded far too many goals. We also haven't scored enough goals, although two at Villa Park is not bad. If you told me we did that before the game, I would think we were not far from a good result."

Set-pieces have been a particular weakness for Liverpool throughout this league campaign. Before facing Villa, only Bournemouth had conceded more set-piece goals. That position has now changed, with Liverpool moving to a league-high 20 goals conceded from set-pieces, excluding penalties, including 11 from corners, the most they have ever allowed in a Premier League season.

Slot highlighted how those moments feed into wider performance swings during matches. "When we are the better team, we struggle to find that goal, mainly because we are not able to create big enough chances when we are the better team," he said. "When we have a period of time when we are struggling, or the other team are better than us, we tend to concede too easily. Before this game, there was only Bournemouth that had conceded more set-piece goals than us. After this, I would not be surprised if we are number one. That is never a good thing."

That fragility was reflected again at Villa Park, and it also marked a personal low point for Slot in league football.

The latest loss also deepened a difficult overall season for Liverpool.

Liverpool statistic Detail 2025-26 season
Premier League goals conceded 52 (first time 50+ in one campaign)
Set-piece goals conceded (excluding penalties) 20 (most in the league)
Goals conceded from corners 11 (Liverpool’s highest in Premier League era)
Results vs top-five teams Last six games: D1, L5

Liverpool have now lost 19 matches in all competitions this season. Since their promotion to the top flight in 1962, only the 1992-93 campaign has brought more defeats, with 20. Liverpool also suffered 19 losses in both the 2004-05 and 2009-10 seasons, underlining the scale of this year’s struggles.
