Liverpool Deja Vu As Missed Chances Cost 1-0 To Galatasaray In The Champions League

Liverpool fall 1-0 to Galatasaray in the Champions League round of 16 first leg, with Arne Slot lamenting numerous missed chances and a deja vu feel. The match featured early pressure, disallowed goals, and a tight contest that leaves Anfield facing a tough away return.

Liverpool face an uphill task in the Champions League round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray at RAMS Park, where Mario Lemina’s seventh-minute header decided the first leg. Arne Slot’s side created several clear chances yet left Istanbul without an away goal, meaning Liverpool must overturn a one-goal deficit when Galatasaray visit Anfield next week.

Both teams finished with 15 attempts each in an open contest, but Liverpool hit the target more often, registering six efforts on goal compared to Galatasaray’s four. The underlying numbers slightly favoured the hosts, with Galatasaray posting 1.5 expected goals against Liverpool’s 1.3, underlining how the English club’s finishing again failed to match their approach play.

Liverpool Deja Vu: Missed Chances vs Galatasaray

Slot admitted the evening felt like a repeat of the earlier group-stage meeting, when Galatasaray also beat Liverpool. Victor Osimhen decided that previous match, while Ibrahima Konate and Osimhen both had efforts ruled out across the two games. This time, Liverpool again saw promising moves break down at key moments despite a strong opening spell in Istanbul.

"It's bad deja vu, you could say," said Slot following the defeat. "The score is the same as the match three months ago. But we played a game where we could have scored much more. We created many chances; we missed many. We were really good in the first 15 minutes. But we couldn't find the goal."

This result also carried statistical significance for Liverpool in European competition. It is the first time Liverpool have lost twice away to the same team in one season in any major European tournament. Slot, overseeing his 100th match in all competitions, became the 18th Liverpool manager to reach that landmark, matching the highest win total among them with a record of W62 D16 L22.

However, Slot also entered the record books in a less welcome way. He is the first Liverpool manager since Graeme Souness to lose the 100th match in charge, after Souness saw his side beaten 5-1 by Coventry City in December 1992. The latest setback also means Liverpool have now suffered two defeats in their past three fixtures across all competitions.

Slot highlighted the challenge of playing at RAMS Park and suggested the return leg will feel very different in England. "This is a very difficult stadium. Both for opposing players and opposing coaches. It's hard to concentrate, and it's hard to communicate. Galatasaray are very lucky to have such an atmosphere," Slot added. "Now we have a match against Galatasaray at our home stadium. We have fantastic fans who always give us strength. They will show this at Anfield, our home ground, and will be a driving force for us."

The numbers from Istanbul underline how fine the margins were between the sides in the first leg, with Galatasaray taking their single big opportunity while Liverpool did not convert any of theirs.

Team Goals Shots Shots on target Expected goals (xG)
Galatasaray 1 15 4 1.5
Liverpool 0 15 6 1.3

As the tie moves to Anfield, Liverpool know a single goal will level the aggregate score, yet the pattern of recent weeks shows there is work to do. Slot’s team continue to create plenty of openings but must now rediscover sharper finishing and maintain concentration if Liverpool are to overturn Galatasaray’s narrow advantage in the second leg.
