Liverpool on Sunday ran riot against Manchester United and denied them a hat-trick of win in the Premier League as Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all scored twice in a record 7-0 thrashing of their arch-rivals at Anfield. Apart from pushing their case for the top four finish, Liverpool handed Manchester United their worst defeat in Premier League history.

A week after a resurgent United beat Newcastle and claimed their first trophy since 2017 by winning the League Cup, they were hammered on either side of halftime as Liverpool recorded their biggest win over Manchester United.

United had looked marginally the better side as Gakpo scored in the 43 minutes to give Liverpool a halftime lead.

Nunez made it 2-0 with a header in the 47th minute. Moments later in the 50th minute, a counter-attacking Liverpool led by Salah paved the way for a second goal from Gakpo to make it 3-0.

Even before United could gather their breath, replan and regroup, Salah joined the party with a clinical finish in the 66th minute. Later, Nunez sent a header past a helpless David De Gea in the 75th.

Salah then rubbed salt on the wounds of the visitors with a close-range effort to become the all-time leading goal-scorer for Liverpool in the Premier League. A record 129th Premier League goal for Liverpool by the Egyptian forward before Roberto Firmino came off the bench to make it 7-0.

Liverpool had thrashed United 4-0 at Anfield last April but considering the change in fortunes for the two clubs since then, Sunday's result was nothing less than shocking.

Manchester United's former defender Gary Neville has termed the defeat as a 'disgrace'. Post the defeat, United are in third place on 49 points and surely out of the title race as they are 14 points behind table-toppers Arsenal.

Liverpool's fourth win in their last five Premier League matches have seen them topple New Castle (41) to occupy the fifth spot with 42 points. They are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.
