Isak Injury Dominates Liverpool Talks As Slot Condemns Van De Ven Reckless Tackle

Liverpool manager Arne Slot criticised Micky van de Ven for a reckless challenge that left Alexander Isak with a fractured fibula. Isak will miss months, impacting Liverpool's plans. Slot emphasised injuries are not solely due to load, while focusing on upcoming fixtures and player availability.

Arne Slot has criticised the challenge from Micky van de Ven that led to Alexander Isak suffering a broken leg, as Liverpool confirmed the forward is expected to miss several months at a key stage of the Premier League season.

Liverpool revealed on Monday that Isak sustained a fractured fibula during the 2-1 victory over Tottenham, when Van de Ven slid in as Isak scored the opening goal and caught the Sweden international, whose ankle bent awkwardly under the impact.

Isak injury: Slot condemns Van de Ven tackle

Slot argued that the tackle from Van de Ven was avoidable and highlighted it while explaining Liverpool’s current injury situation, stressing that most absences are not caused by fatigue or workload management problems within the squad.

The Liverpool head coach told reporters: "The most injuries we have are not related to overloading. When you look at Alex's injury, it has nothing to do with overloading the player. It's the same with Wataru Endo. Of course, there are one or two that might have to do with overloadingCody Gakpo has a muscle and the same with Joe Gomez. Yeah, [Isak's injury] was a reckless challenge. I've said a lot about the tackle of Xavi Simons, which for me was completely unintentional. I don't think you will ever get an injury out of a tackle like that. But the tackle from Van de Ven, if you make a tackle like that 10 times, 10 times there is a chance the player gets a serious injury."

Isak’s goal against Spurs was only the third since arriving from Newcastle United for a record fee, and the injury halts what Slot felt was steady progress as the striker adjusted to Liverpool’s style and the demands of Premier League football.

Slot underlined how Isak’s adaptation has been slowed by earlier fitness problems and limited training time, noting that the forward was finally approaching the level shown during last season’s impressive campaign at Newcastle before this setback.

Slot added: "It's been a really challenging period for him. You join a new club and you are very excited. You want to show immediately all the qualities you have. But that was simply impossible with him because you haven't trained for three or four months on a serious level and you are playing in the Premier League. You need to be at the top of the game to impact a game. And that took months before we could bring him up. We always knew it would take him time. That's why it's so unlucky that he's now injured. We all saw he was getting closer and closer to the player that he was last season at Newcastle."

Liverpool Isak injury and Salah absence shape Premier League attacking options

Isak’s lay-off comes as Liverpool are already without Mohamed Salah, who is with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations following reports of tension with Slot earlier in December, leaving the Liverpool attack stretched ahead of two home league fixtures.

Liverpool next face Wolves at Anfield on Saturday, with the visitors still winless and in the relegation zone, before hosting Leeds United on New Year’s Day, giving Slot back-to-back home matches to manage reduced attacking resources in the Premier League.

Premier League Isak injury context and Liverpool transfer links

With Salah’s long-term situation unresolved, Liverpool are among the clubs linked with Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, who has delivered strong attacking numbers in the Premier League during the 2025 calendar year.

Slot declined to comment on potential signings, insisting attention must remain on the current Liverpool squad and the immediate league programme while Isak recovers and Salah remains on international duty with Egypt.

The head coach said: "My first and only thoughts are on upcoming two games. Two difficult ones. Two home games, which is really nice. It's time for the players we have available to do what they've done so many timesroll their sleeves up to help us in best way to get the results we want. The players that are available need to give everything they have, and the fans as well as they usually do. That will help us."

The interest in Semenyo reflects current form, with the Bournemouth player involved in 20 Premier League goals in 2025, matching Dominic Solanke’s club record for a single calendar year with 14 goals and six assists, underlining why Liverpool and others are monitoring the winger.

Despite the blow of Isak’s fractured fibula and Salah’s absence, Slot stressed that Liverpool must rely on available players and home support against Wolves and Leeds, while Isak works towards a return after what the coach views as an avoidable challenge from Van de Ven.
