Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will take no part in their Champions League round of 16 2nd leg match against Real Madrid due to illness.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will take no part in their Champions League round of 16 2nd leg match against Real Madrid due to illness.

The midfielder hasn't travelled with the team in Madrid as the Reds have already landed in the Spanish capital for their Wednesday clash at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Liverpool captain also missed the training on Tuesday at the Liverpool training centre due to his problem and won't play a part in the crucial game.

It is a massive blow for Jurgen Klopp and his team as they look to overcome the 2-5 deficit from the first leg of their last 16 tie at the Anfield.

Stefan Bajcetic out for Liverpool

Compounding Jurgen Klopp's problem ahead of the match, young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is also set to not feature against Real Madrid due to an ongoing adductor problem. The midfielder travelled to Madrid but has been ruled out of the match.

"It's a stress response. He doesn't feel a lot but we have to let it settle," the Liverpool manager said.

With both Bajcetic and Henderson out while Thiago Alcantara is already sidelined with a hip problem, it will be among Harvey Elliott, Naby Keita and James Milner to partner Fabinho at the heart of the Liverpool midfield.

Liverpool

The Reds do need a win by a margin of 3 goals to stay in the Champions League. They squandered a two-goal lead at Anfield and ended up losing the match 2-5 in the first leg. And before the match, their manager took a rather modest approach telling Liverpool as 'outsiders' in the tie.

"We are the complete outsiders. Real Madrid are 3-0 up and that is not what you want for Christmas, but it's football and we will try to give it a go. We have nothing to lose so that is a better situation than when you have everything to lose," Klopp said.
