Liverpool Must Stay Composed And Focused In Last Goodison Derby Against Everton

Arne Slot emphasises the need for Liverpool players to maintain composure and intensity in their final Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park. Following a recent defeat, Slot calls for a strong mental approach to overcome the challenging atmosphere.

Arne Slot has cautioned his Liverpool squad about the need for composure when they face Everton in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Despite a recent setback, where Liverpool's hopes for a quadruple were dashed by a 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup, they remain six points ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League standings.

The upcoming match against Everton is significant as it marks the 106th and final league encounter at Goodison Park before Everton relocates to their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock. Slot emphasised that Liverpool must maintain focus and not let emotions affect their performance. "It is probably going to be a fantastic atmosphere and that is never easy to play against because every single time they cross the halfway line or get a corner, the fans will cheer for that," he stated.

Liverpool Urged to Keep Cool Heads at Goodison

Liverpool could extend their lead over Arsenal to nine points with a victory on Wednesday. This game will be only the third instance in Premier League history where Liverpool faces Everton while leading the table at day's start. In previous such encounters during the 2019-20 season, Liverpool secured a 5-2 win and a 0-0 draw, eventually claiming the title that year.

Slot acknowledged that playing in such charged atmospheres is not new for his players. He expressed hope that they would concentrate on their tasks without being swayed by emotions. "I hope they can focus on what they have to do, but it is not only tactical, you also have to stand up to those emotions," he remarked.

Liverpool's unbeaten streak in the Premier League now stands at 19 matches, with 14 wins and five draws. However, history shows challenges when visiting Everton during similar runs; they lost 0-1 in October 1978 after a 23-game unbeaten streak and again by the same scoreline in March 1988 following a 31-game run.

The Reds also suffered a defeat in this fixture last season, losing 2-0, which ended their 12-match unbeaten run against Everton in the league. Slot stressed that Liverpool must deliver more than they did against Plymouth if they want a favourable result this time.

Learning from Recent Defeats

Reflecting on the Plymouth loss, Slot noted how aggressive tackles and emotional intensity played significant roles. He urged his team to be prepared for similar challenges against Everton. "I noticed also in the Plymouth game that the intensity of the tackles, how aggressive they were, it was a quality of their players," he said.

Slot believes competing for trophies is essential at Liverpool and deemed losing to Plymouth unacceptable. He called for an improved performance from his players, stating that both results and performances must align with Liverpool's high standards.

The match against Everton presents an opportunity for Liverpool to demonstrate resilience and skill under pressure. As Slot highlighted, maintaining mental strength will be crucial for success amidst an electrifying atmosphere at Goodison Park.
