Liverpool Part Ways With Aaron Briggs After Set-Piece Coaching Review

Liverpool have removed set-piece coach Aaron Briggs from the staff after repeated dead-ball problems this season. The change comes while Liverpool sit fourth in the Premier League, 10 points behind leaders Arsenal, with pressure growing on defensive details.

Arne Slot's team now prepare to host Leeds United at Anfield on New Year's Day. That match will be Liverpool's first since Briggs left, with the rest of the backroom team expected to handle all set-piece planning.

Across Europe's top five leagues, no club have allowed more goals from set-plays than Liverpool this season. In the Premier League, Liverpool have conceded 12 such goals, excluding penalties, with seven coming from corners, including against bottom side Wolves in the recent 2-1 win.

Briggs joined Liverpool in July 2024 as an individual development coach, then moved into the set-piece role. Briggs formed part of Slot's staff during Liverpool's Premier League title success last season, working within the men's first-team group.

Liverpool decided a change was needed, with set-piece duties now shared among the remaining coaches. The club said: "Liverpool FC can confirm Aaron Briggs has departed his role as set-piece coach of the men's first team," a club statement read, confirming the departure and closing Briggs' short spell in that position.

The defensive record from dead balls, combined with current league standing, shapes the context for this move. Liverpool now continue their campaign, starting against Leeds United, with a revised coaching structure and a renewed focus on limiting set-piece chances against future opponents.
