Liverpool have announced that Tyler Morton, an England Under-21 midfielder, has transferred to Lyon for a fee of £15 million (€13 million). Morton, who joined Liverpool's academy at age seven, played 14 matches for the senior team. His appearances included five games under Arne Slot during Liverpool's Premier League-winning season, all in domestic cups or the Champions League.
Morton spent time on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. He gained significant playing time with both clubs. Now, Liverpool has allowed him to leave permanently. This move is part of Liverpool's strategy to raise nearly £150 million through player sales this transfer window, supporting their spending spree exceeding £260 million.

The French club Lyon faced provisional relegation from Ligue 1 due to financial troubles in June but successfully appealed the decision. They confirmed Morton's transfer involves an initial payment of £10 million plus £5 million in potential add-ons. Additionally, Liverpool retains a 20% sell-on clause for any future sale of Morton by Lyon.
Morton had one year left on his contract at Anfield before signing a five-year deal with Lyon. The Premier League champions stated: "The 22-year-old agreed terms and finalised his switch to the Ligue 1 outfit on Tuesday. Everyone at LFC would like to wish Tyler all the very best for the future."
Tyler Morton is now the sixth player to exit Liverpool permanently since last season ended. Other players who have left include Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, Nat Phillips, and Luis Diaz. These departures are part of Liverpool's broader strategy to reshape their squad while managing finances effectively.
This transfer marks a new chapter for Morton as he embarks on his career in France with Lyon. The move aligns with both clubs' objectives: Liverpool continues its financial strategy while Lyon strengthens its squad amid recent challenges.
