Liverpool have made a significant move in the transfer market by securing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal. This comes shortly after announcing Trent Alexander-Arnold's transfer to Real Madrid, where he will participate in the Club World Cup. The Reds acted swiftly to activate Frimpong's £35 million (€29.5 million) release clause, with the transfer set to be finalised when the window opens on Sunday.
Frimpong played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen's success, helping them clinch their first Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season. He made 53 appearances across all competitions as they finished second in 2024-25. Notably, the Dutch international has scored more goals (19) than any other defender in Europe's top five leagues since the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

The addition of Frimpong strengthens Liverpool's Dutch contingent, joining Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch at Anfield. There is also potential for another former Leverkusen teammate to join him soon. Liverpool are currently negotiating with Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz, with talks reportedly reaching an advanced stage for a deal valued at £109 million.
Expressing his excitement about joining Liverpool, Frimpong shared his thoughts on the club's official website: "It went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me, it was a no-brainer." He further added that he urged his agents to finalise the deal quickly.
Frimpong assured Liverpool fans of his commitment: "Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate, and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together." He expressed gratitude towards the fans for welcoming him and promised not to disappoint them.
This strategic acquisition highlights Liverpool's intent to maintain their competitive edge in both domestic and international competitions. The club aims to build on its recent successes by integrating talented players like Frimpong into their squad.
