Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota has tragically passed away at the age of 28 on Thursday following a car crash in northwestern Spain, according to Spanish outlet Marca. The accident reportedly occurred on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora, just days after Jota's wedding celebrations in Portugal.

Local authorities confirmed that two individuals lost their lives in the crash. The vehicle is said to have caught fire after the impact, with flames spreading to nearby vegetation. The victims were identified as being 28 and 26 years old, believed to be Jota and his brother. The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station responded to the emergency.

"Two young people die in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responds," read a statement from Zamora's Provincial Council.

"The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP."

While Liverpool Football Club has yet to issue an official statement, tributes from fans have already started pouring in on social media, expressing shock and heartbreak over the sudden loss of the talented forward.

Born in Porto, Diogo Jota began his footballing journey in the youth ranks of Paços de Ferreira before making a move to Atlético Madrid in 2016. He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers the following year, where he made a strong impression in the Premier League.

Jota signed for Liverpool in 2020 for a reported €44.7 million and enjoyed a successful spell at Anfield. During his time with the Reds, he made 182 appearances, scored 65 goals, and provided 26 assists. He lifted the FA Cup and League Cup under Jurgen Klopp, and most recently, the Premier League title under new manager Arne Slot in the 2024/25 season.

Internationally, Jota represented Portugal with distinction, playing key roles in their UEFA Nations League victories in both 2019 and 2025.

His untimely death comes just weeks after marrying his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony held in Porto.
