Liverpool target Lazio defender De Vrij

Bengaluru, November 29: Liverpool could sign Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij this January if they fail to land their top target Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton, according to reports.

De Vrij only has six months left on his contract and will reportedly sign a contract extension in the coming weeks until 2020. However, the key to the deal is Lazio softening to include a buyout clause which has caught the attention of everyone.

In his new deal, allegedly there is a buyout clause as low as just €25m and now according to reports, Liverpool have turned their head towards the Dutch defender who has established himself as one of the top defenders of Serie A in recent times.

Liverpool's struggles in defense have been a big talking point for the last couple of seasons and this season also the Reds have been suffering from defensive woes as they have already conceded 18 goals in 13 Premier League games.

To ease the situation, manager Jurgen Klopp earlier in the Summer, set his sight on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk. However, later they had to abandon their attempts to sign the defender after being accused of making an illegal approach.

But it is understood that the Merseyside will again approach the defender in the Winter window. However, this time they have reportedly developed a backup option and if somehow they could not manage to land van Dijk again, the KOPs are ready to swoop in on the former Feyernoord defender with a low transfer fee.

But Liverpool are not alone in their interest in the Dutch defender as the 25-year-old is also being monitored by the likes of Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

De Vrij is currently enjoying a fine season with Lazio, who have lost just twice all season, currently sitting in fifth place in the Serie A table, just nine points off leaders Napoli.
