Liverpool manager Arne Slot has emphasised that securing a top-tier defensive midfielder is not the sole priority for the Reds as they await their first signing of the transfer window. Liverpool remains the only Premier League club yet to make a signing ahead of Slot's debut season, following nearly nine years under Jurgen Klopp.
During Klopp's final season, Liverpool underwent a midfield overhaul with the arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch. Despite these additions, Liverpool's title challenge faltered in the closing weeks, leading pundits to question why Fabinho was not replaced after his move to Al-Ittihad.

Slot highlighted that Liverpool is looking to strengthen various positions. "I think Ryan Gravenberch did really well in that position and we have other options as well," he said. "The best way to judge it is when we have all the players back and we still haven't."
He added, "A club like Liverpool always keeps its eye open to see what's available, players that can strengthen the squad and that is what we [sporting director] Richard [Hughes] mostly are looking to do but that is not particular to one position."
Last season, Klopp's side conceded more goals (41), allowed more expected goals against (46.18 xGA), and faced more shots (414) than Manchester City or Arsenal. This has led to continued links with potential defensive midfield signings.
Trent Alexander-Arnold played a hybrid role during Klopp's final season, often moving into central midfield from his usual right-back position. His future has been questioned since Klopp's departure, but Slot believes he will be crucial for Liverpool in 2024-25.
"We didn't speak about his commitment," Slot stated. "We only spoke about the way I wanted him to play and how he could fit into that style." He noted Alexander-Arnold was focused on the Euros during their conversation and appeared fit and sharp in clips Slot reviewed.
"I can't wait to see him train," Slot added. "But some others did quite well, so it is interesting to see if the others come back then the level goes up even more."
Slot acknowledged the strong foundation left by Klopp: "Jurgen left this squad in a very good place, I said that before. Now it is up to us to keep performing like Liverpool did for so many years." He expressed confidence in maintaining high performance levels with the current squad.
The focus remains on evaluating where improvements can be made within the team. Slot and Hughes are actively looking for opportunities to enhance the squad across multiple positions rather than focusing solely on one area.
Liverpool fans eagerly await new signings as they look forward to Slot’s first season at Anfield. The club aims to build on its existing strengths while addressing any weaknesses identified during last season’s campaign.
