Liverpool Pays Heartfelt Tribute To Diogo Jota In First Match Following His Tragic Death

Liverpool honoured Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva during their first match since the tragic car accident in Spain. The crash occurred just after midnight on July 3 in Zamora province, claiming the lives of both brothers. Liverpool's pre-season preparations were delayed, but they resumed with a friendly against Preston North End on Sunday.

Before the match began, Deepdale resonated with 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' as Preston captain Ben Whiteman placed a wreath before Liverpool fans. Captains Mohamed Salah and Whiteman led the teams onto the field while supporters displayed flags and banners, chanting Jota's name. A moment of silence was observed to remember Jota and Silva, followed by applause from the crowd as the game reached the 20th minute.

On the field, Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory. Conor Bradley scored first in the 33rd minute, finishing past Daniel Iversen from close range. Darwin Nunez extended Liverpool's lead eight minutes into the second half and honoured Jota by mimicking two of his signature celebrations. Although Liam Lindsay scored for Preston, Cody Gakpo sealed Liverpool's win with another tribute celebration two minutes before full-time.

The official match programme included tributes to Jota and Silva. Earlier this week, Liverpool announced they would retire Jota's number 20 shirt across all teams, including women's and academy squads. Arne Slot expressed that players should embrace their emotions: "If we want to laugh, we laugh; if we want to cry, we're going to cry," he said before Liverpool's victory at Deepdale.

Slot emphasised that players should be true to themselves: "If they want to train, they can train; if they don't want to train, they can not train. But be yourself, don't think you have to be different than your emotions tell you." On retiring Jota's number, Slot added: "We will always carry him with us in our hearts... To retire his shirt is the one thing we could, should and have done."
