Liverpool Now Expects To Win Trophies, Says Departing Robertson After Final Game
Andy Robertson reflected on Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Brentford by saying there is now an expectation for the club to win trophies, after nine years at Anfield. The result secured fifth place in the Premier League and guaranteed Champions League football, on a day when both Robertson and Mohamed Salah said goodbye in an emotional Anfield farewell.
"It's been a hugely disappointing season from how we wanted it to pan out, but it was clear, certainly before Christmas, that it wasn't going to be the one that we wanted it to be in terms of winning things," Robertson told Sky Sports. "It was so important to make sure we were in the Champions League. We limped over in the end, and I'm happy me and Mo can leave the club in a position where they're competing on the biggest stage and have the biggest games next season. I hope they can kick on."

Liverpool finished the campaign with 60 Premier League points, which is a low total for a side ending fifth or higher. That figure matches Tottenham’s 2006-07 tally, when Tottenham also finished fifth with 60 points. It is also the joint-lowest points total ever for a team that reached the Champions League through league position, alongside Liverpool’s 2003-04 side.
| Team / Season | Outcome | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Liverpool 2025-26 | Finished 5th, qualified for Champions League | 60 |
| Tottenham 2006-07 | Finished 5th | 60 |
| Liverpool 2003-04 | Qualified for Champions League | 60 |
Dropped points at Anfield were another major theme. Liverpool let an 11th point slip from a winning position at home when Kevin Schade’s stooping header levelled the match for Brentford. Only the 2014-15 season, with 12 points, and the 2015-16 campaign, with 14, saw Liverpool lose more home points after leading in the Premier League.
"When we first came in, it was a dream to win the Champions League or the Premier Leagueit wasn't an expectation. Now, it is an expectation, and that's down to us that have brought success to the club. It's now an expectation that Liverpool will be competing at the top end of the league; they're going to be trying to fight for Champions Leagues and other trophies. It's a credit to all the lads."
As the farewells unfolded, Robertson highlighted how emotional the afternoon felt inside Anfield. "Jordan Henderson's reception probably got me the most emotional all day! Then Caoimhin [Kelleher], when he ran to the Kop at half-time, that was special. To play against Brentford, it was fitting that they were both here." The tributes underlined the influence of long-serving players on Liverpool’s recent era.
On the pitch, Salah set up Curtis Jones for the opening goal shortly before the hour mark, giving Liverpool the lead in front of an expectant crowd. Schade’s equaliser denied a final victory and left Brentford just short of European qualification. The draw allowed Sunderland to move into the Europa League places after defeating Chelsea, which pushed Brentford out of Europe.
Robertson accepted that Liverpool’s title defence fell well below earlier standards but insisted the club remains positioned to challenge again. Champions League qualification, secured despite late-season stumbles, means the next campaign will still feature major European nights at Anfield. Robertson and Salah depart with Liverpool back among Europe’s elite and with expectations fixed on further trophies.
