Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set to step in for the injured Christian Pulisic in AC Milan's Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday. Coach Paulo Fonseca confirmed this change, expressing confidence that Loftus-Cheek can match Pulisic's influence at San Siro. Pulisic has been impressive this season with eight goals and six assists but suffered a calf injury in last week's 2-1 loss to Atalanta.
Loftus-Cheek replaced Pulisic during the Atalanta match and will continue in that role against Red Star. Fonseca noted that while Loftus-Cheek and Pulisic have different playing styles, the expectations remain consistent. "What I want from Loftus is the same as I want from Christian," Fonseca stated. He highlighted Loftus-Cheek's ability to carry the ball effectively, which could be advantageous in the more open Champions League games.

AC Milan currently holds nine points from five Champions League matches. In contrast, Red Star Belgrade sits at 31st place with only one victory, a significant 5-1 win over Stuttgart in their last game. Fonseca acknowledged the challenge posed by Red Star, describing them as a physical team with a potent counter-attack led by three fast attackers.
Fonseca emphasized the importance of securing three points against Red Star to maintain their position for the play-off round. Milan's hopes of reaching the top eight remain alive after three consecutive European victories. "I think the most important thing is to win the next one," Fonseca remarked, noting that failing to do so would complicate their chances.
Milan aims to continue their winning streak in Europe, focusing on each game as it comes. The coach stressed that while they are aware of potential future opportunities, their immediate goal is to win against Red Star Belgrade before considering subsequent matches.
