Lionesses Sign Freya Godfrey; Putellas Rumours Swirl

London City Lionesses have secured a fresh contract for Freya Godfrey while attention grows on a possible move for Alexia Putellas. The Women’s Super League side are yet to confirm any deal for Putellas but reports suggest advanced talks.

Godfrey’s agreement is for three more years, strengthening the club’s long-term attacking plans after a strong first WSL campaign. The 21-year-old attacker has also broken into recent England squads, underlining rising status at domestic and international level.

Lionesses sign Freya Godfrey; Putellas rumours

Putellas, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, is available on a free transfer after leaving Barcelona. The midfielder ended a 14-year spell there, collecting many trophies, and has interest from leading clubs across Europe and North America, according to widespread reports.

Multiple outlets now state that Putellas has reached an agreement to join London City Lionesses. The club have not commented publicly, yet the potential signing would boost a squad already strengthened by former England goalkeeper Mary Earps and other established internationals.

London City Lionesses finished sixth in their debut Women’s Super League season, following promotion. Godfrey played a central role in attack, leading the team for both goals and assists during that campaign, and earning an extended deal as reward.

She was the Lionesses' leading scorer in the WSL last term, netting six goals, while also providing a team-high four assists.

"I'veloved my time here so far. It was amazing to win the Championship title in 2025 and torepresentthe club in their first WSL campaign, when we had areally strongseason," said the 21-year-old, who has been a part of England's recent squads.

"We have world-class players here, people who have won World Cups, Champions League titles and know what it takes to win. I'm training and playing alongside players I looked up to when I was growing up such as Nikita Parris, who I watched for years in the national team, Danielle van de Donk when I was at Arsenal, and Delphine Cascarino is one of the best wingers in the world. To have players like that to train alongside every single day is indescribable."

London City Lionesses now move into their second WSL season with Godfrey tied down and speculation surrounding Alexia Putellas ongoing. The club’s combination of experienced internationals and emerging talent sets a clear platform for further progress.
