Gian Piero Gasperini Criticises Ademola Lookman For Poor Penalty Taking In Champions League Match

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has labelled Ademola Lookman as one of the worst penalty takers after his miss in a Champions League match against Club Brugge. Despite scoring earlier, Lookman's failed penalty contributed to Atalanta's exit from the tournament.

Atalanta's coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, expressed strong criticism towards Ademola Lookman after a missed penalty in their Champions League clash against Club Brugge. Despite Lookman's goal early in the second half, Atalanta was eliminated with a 5-2 aggregate loss. Gasperini remarked, "Lookman was not supposed to take that penalty, he is one of the worst penalty takers I've ever seen."

Gasperini highlighted that Lookman has a poor record with penalties, even during training sessions. He suggested that Charles De Ketelaere or Mateo Retegui should have taken the spot-kick instead. The Italian manager was displeased with Lookman's decision to take the penalty after scoring earlier in the match.

Gasperini Critiques Lookman's Penalty Skills

Atalanta faced an uphill battle after losing 2-1 in the first leg away from home. Chemsdine Talbi scored twice and Ferran Jutgla added another, leaving Atalanta trailing 3-0 by halftime in the second leg. Despite Lookman's effort to spark a comeback, Simon Mignolet saved his penalty attempt.

Mignolet's save made him only the second goalkeeper from Brugge to stop a Champions League penalty. The first was Ludovic Butelle against Copenhagen in September 2016. This achievement added to Mignolet's growing reputation as a reliable shot-stopper.

Throughout his career in Europe's top leagues, Lookman has taken six penalties across all competitions, converting four of them. His other miss occurred while playing for Fulham during a Premier League match against West Ham in 2020.

Team Discipline Issues

Gasperini also addressed disciplinary issues within his team. Atalanta captain Rafael Toloi received a red card late in the game for pushing Maxim De Cuyper following an argument over a throw-in. Gasperini stated, "That was an ugly incident and we must never lose our heads."

Atalanta exited the Champions League with pride despite their defeat, having competed against top teams like Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Barcelona. They became the second Italian team to be eliminated from this season's tournament after AC Milan's exit following a draw with Feyenoord.

Despite their exit from the competition, Atalanta remains third in Serie A and continues to focus on maintaining their position domestically. The team aims to learn from these experiences and improve their performance in future matches both at home and abroad.
