Julen Lopetegui expressed regret to West Ham supporters after their 5-0 defeat by Liverpool at the London Stadium. The loss halted West Ham's recent unbeaten run and intensified pressure on Lopetegui, who had been under scrutiny due to a challenging start. Despite a promising streak, the team struggled against the league leaders, trailing 3-0 at halftime amid boos from fans.
The Hammers' defence has been porous this year, conceding more Premier League goals in 2024 than any other team. With 79 goals allowed, it's their worst defensive record since 1967 when they conceded 85. Currently positioned 13th in the standings after 19 matches, they risk dropping further if Manchester United wins against Newcastle United.

Lopetegui acknowledged the fans' frustration and vowed improvement. "The fans are always right, and we understand them," he told Sky Sports. "We are trying to do our best every day, to be able to become a better team." He emphasised the need for better performances in home games.
West Ham failed to register a single shot on target for the first time since May 2021 against Everton. Lopetegui admitted that facing top-tier teams like Liverpool demands high performance levels which his team did not meet. He stated on West Ham's official website that while losing is part of football, the manner of defeat was disappointing for their supporters.
Lopetegui remains optimistic about bouncing back despite this setback. He highlighted their previous good form over four matches and stressed the importance of hard work moving forward. "Today is a bad day and we have to recover," he said, urging his team to focus on future challenges.
Reflecting on the match, Lopetegui noted that Liverpool is among the best teams in the Premier League. He acknowledged that such opponents require teams to perform at their highest level, something West Ham failed to achieve during this encounter.
