Lopetegui Takes Charge Of Qatar National Team Ahead Of World Cup Qualification Matches

Julen Lopetegui has returned to international management as Qatar's head coach. He aims to lead the team through the remaining matches of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, following a challenging start in their group.

Julen Lopetegui, the former coach of Spain, has taken on a new role with Qatar's national team. His appointment comes as Qatar aims to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. Currently, Qatar is fourth in their qualification group and cannot finish in the top two to qualify directly. However, they are likely to advance to the fourth round where two more spots are available.

Lopetegui's coaching journey has seen various ups and downs. He led Spain successfully through the 2018 World Cup qualifiers but was dismissed just before the tournament began due to his agreement with Real Madrid. His tenure at Real Madrid was short-lived, lasting only four months due to a poor start to the season.

Lopetegui Appointed Qatar National Team Coach

The Qatar Football Association announced Lopetegui's appointment via a video on X. "Julien Lopetegui is the incoming coach of the national team," they stated. He will lead Qatar through the remaining matches of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers. This decision follows Qatar's choice to replace Luis Garcia with Lopetegui ahead of crucial matches against Iran and Uzbekistan in June.

After leaving Real Madrid, Lopetegui joined Sevilla and achieved success by winning the Europa League in 2020. Later, he took charge at Wolves during the 2022-23 season and helped them avoid relegation from the Premier League. However, he left before the next season started due to disagreements over transfers.

Lopetegui's time at West Ham was less successful. Despite spending over £130 million on transfers, his team won only six out of 20 league games under his management. This resulted in a win percentage of just 30% and an average of 1.2 goals per game.

Qatar's decision to bring in Lopetegui reflects their ambition for international football success. With his experience and strategic approach, they hope to navigate through challenging qualifiers and secure a place in the upcoming World Cup.
