Desire Doue Shines As PSG Silence Critics With Key UCL Winner Against Monaco

Luis Enrique praises Desire Doue for delivering a decisive late equaliser and winner after coming off the bench, helping Paris Saint-Germain overturn an early deficit against Monaco in the Champions League. The performance underscores the young forward's value to a youthful PSG squad facing pressure in Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain produced a major Champions League comeback against Monaco, turning a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 first-leg win, with substitute Desire Doue scoring twice and impressing Luis Enrique in a high-pressure all-Ligue 1 play-off tie on 17 February 2026.

The victory came in demanding circumstances for PSG, who were trailing 2-0, had a penalty saved and lost Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembele to another injury, yet still claimed an away win that was only their second Champions League success after falling at least two goals behind.

Doue Shines for PSG vs Monaco

Doue started on the bench after nine matches without a goal in any competition, yet entered earlier than planned when Dembele, who had been a pre-match injury doubt, limped off after 27 minutes, and the young attacker changed the whole rhythm of PSG's Champions League tie almost immediately.

One minute and 59 seconds after replacing Dembele, Doue struck PSG's first goal, which is the fastest scored by any substitute in this Champions League campaign, and that early impact lifted the visitors, who had been stunned by Monaco's quick start and clinical finishing.

Monaco had seized control through a Folarin Balogun brace, and PSG missed a big chance when Vitinha saw a penalty saved by Philipp Kohn, but momentum swung when Kohn pushed out a Doue shot straight to Achraf Hakimi, who converted the equaliser before Aleksandr Golovin received a red card.

With Monaco down to ten players, PSG kept pushing and Doue struck again in the 67th minute, completing the turnaround and making history as only the second player to score at least two Champions League goals as a substitute for PSG, following Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick against Club Brugge in October 2019.

Everyone was killing him in the last few weeks. He's an incredible player, he's different," Luis Enrique told Canal+ afterwards. "We have a lot of players of this level, who are very young but with a lot of ambition. I'm very happy for him because he deserved this performance. He was very important.

Champions League pressure and Luis Enrique's reaction

Dembele's latest fitness issue adds to PSG's concerns this season, yet Luis Enrique underlined the squad's capacity to handle the schedule and expectations, as the Spanish coach stressed the youth of the group and insisted that the pressure around the Champions League campaign is something the players embrace.

It's normal, there is pressure on all the players. We are a very young team. We have a bit more experience, but this year, we have the pressure to win. We like this pressure. We showed that we are capable.

This triumph is only the second time PSG have won a Champions League match after being at least two goals behind in 27 attempts, with the previous turnaround a 4-2 success over Manchester City last season, which helped carry PSG towards a first European crown under Luis Enrique.

It was a special match, because the first action [for Monaco] ended in a goal," he said. "The second time they overcame our pressure, they scored their second. In this kind of moment, it's easy to lose confidence individually and collectively, but we got over that moment. The team was sensational in terms of their mentality.

PSG now take a narrow advantage into the second leg of the Champions League play-off against Monaco, with Doue's display easing recent criticism and reinforcing Luis Enrique's belief in the squad's mentality, even as Dembele's situation offers a reminder of the physical challenges facing the team this season.
