Luis Enrique Guides PSG To Champions League Glory Despite Major Player Departures

Luis Enrique has led Paris Saint-Germain to their first Champions League title, achieving a historic treble despite losing key players like Kylian Mbappe. The team's resilience and new talent have redefined their identity in European football.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has achieved a historic milestone by winning the Champions League under Luis Enrique's guidance. This victory comes 15 months after Enrique boldly predicted that PSG would thrive without Kylian Mbappe. A year after Mbappe's transfer to Real Madrid, PSG triumphed over Inter with a 5-0 win in Munich, marking the largest margin in any European Cup or Champions League final.

In his second season, Luis Enrique led PSG to a treble, securing the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France alongside the Champions League. The team's new identity was shaped by young talents like Desire Doue, who scored twice and assisted another goal in the final. Despite initial doubts due to only one win in their first five European matches, PSG became the second French club to win the Champions League since Marseille in 1993.

PSG Wins Champions League Under Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique faced criticism after a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich left PSG on the brink of elimination. He responded by gathering players and staff for an internal meeting, emphasizing that talent wasn't lacking but execution was. He demanded better intensity and even threatened to resign if training standards didn't improve.

A crucial match against Manchester City in January saw PSG come from behind to win 4-2, sparking a transformation in their season. From that point, they were nearly flawless, securing a 4-1 victory in Stuttgart and progressing through knockout rounds against Brest, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal.

The team demonstrated resilience under pressure, knowing that success in the Champions League was paramount. Ousmane Dembele had an outstanding season with 32 goals across all competitions. Meanwhile, Doue emerged as a star for PSG, contributing significantly in the final with three goal involvements.

Key Players and Discipline

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma delivered crucial performances at key moments despite media criticism. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, signed in January, scored in the final to bring his tally to eight goals for PSG. Luis Enrique also enforced discipline within the squad; he benched Dembele for being late to training before a league match against Arsenal. Despite losing that game 2-0, Enrique called it his best decision of the season.

Now crowned European champions, this victory fulfills Qatar Sports Investments' long-standing ambition since acquiring PSG in 2011: becoming Europe's best football club.
