Luis Enrique Commends Diego Simeone's Energy Before Champions League Encounter

Ahead of their first Champions League meeting, Luis Enrique praises Diego Simeone's energy and longevity at Atletico Madrid. Both teams seek to improve their league standings after challenging starts.

Paris Saint-Germain's coach, Luis Enrique, is gearing up for a Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid. He expressed admiration for Diego Simeone, Atletico's long-standing manager. Both teams have had a mixed start in their league-phase games, each securing only one win out of three matches. A victory at home would be crucial for PSG, who currently sit 19th with four points, while Atletico is 27th with three points.

PSG and Atletico Madrid have never met in the Champions League before. However, Luis Enrique has faced Simeone numerous times during his tenure at Barcelona. Between 2014 and 2017, Enrique's Barcelona won nine out of 14 encounters against Simeone's Atletico, drawing twice and losing three times. During this period, Enrique led Barcelona to a Champions League and LaLiga double in the 2014-15 season.

Enrique Praises Simeone Ahead of Match

Luis Enrique shared his respect for Simeone's long-term success at Atletico Madrid. "We've played against each other as players and then as managers," he said. "I admire Simeone; when a coach can stay for so many years at a top club it means he is great because that is such a difficult thing to do." Simeone has been with Atletico for 13 years, winning two LaLiga titles and two Europa League trophies.

PSG has struggled offensively since losing Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid during the close season. In their three Champions League matches so far, they have scored only two goals: a narrow 1-0 victory over Girona and a 1-1 draw with PSV, followed by a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal. Coach Luis Enrique remains optimistic about improving both defence and attack.

Enrique emphasised his focus on creating scoring opportunities rather than discussing individual players' performances. "What interests me is to always generate goalscoring opportunities and to arrive in the penalty area because you have managed to be stronger than your opponent," he stated. This approach aims to strengthen PSG's overall gameplay.

Goalkeeper Dilemma

The decision on who will guard PSG's goal remains uncertain. Matvey Safonov, who impressed with a clean sheet against Girona, might replace Gianluigi Donnarumma after costly errors against Arsenal and PSV. Luis Enrique hinted at making this decision soon: "You will find out tomorrow. After a good cup of cappuccino, I will decide who the goalkeeper is."

Atletico Madrid had considered hiring Luis Enrique before appointing Simeone as their manager. Reflecting on this possibility, Enrique commented that if he had joined Atletico back then, he wouldn't have lasted as long as Simeone due to the latter's exceptional energy levels.

The upcoming match between PSG and Atletico promises an exciting encounter between two renowned managers with rich histories in European football. Both teams are eager to improve their standings in the Champions League group stage through this pivotal match-up.
