Luis Enrique Acknowledges Challenge From Brest Ahead Of Champions League Clash

Ahead of the Champions League clash, PSG's Luis Enrique highlights Brest's collective strength and stresses the need for focus despite a solid first leg victory.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are approaching their Champions League play-off second leg against Brest with caution, despite a 3-0 lead from the first leg. PSG head coach Luis Enrique emphasised the collective strength of Brest as a challenge. Vitinha's penalty and two goals from Ousmane Dembele secured PSG's advantage in the first encounter. This victory marked PSG's 19th instance of winning the first leg of a European knockout tie away from home.

PSG have progressed from 17 of their previous 18 such ties, only faltering against Manchester United in the 2018-19 Champions League. They remain unbeaten in their last 31 matches against Brest across all competitions, achieving 23 wins and eight draws. This streak is the longest unbeaten run against any opponent in PSG's history. This season alone, PSG have defeated Brest three times.

Luis Enrique Prepares for Brest Challenge

Luis Enrique remains focused on securing PSG's first Champions League title, despite their current dominance in Ligue 1 with a ten-point lead. "Without a doubt, it was a tricky match despite the very good result," he stated. He stressed the importance of treating each match as an obligation to win and highlighted the need for comprehensive attacking and defending strategies.

Brest's strength lies in their teamwork rather than individual brilliance, though players like Pierre Lees-Melou and Ludovic Ajorque stand out. Enrique acknowledged Brest's challenging play style and emphasised preparation to counter it. "Can Brest turn things around? Our aim is not to let that happen," he added.

Luis Enrique also expressed satisfaction with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a January signing from Napoli. Kvaratskhelia has contributed to two goals in six appearances for PSG, scoring his first goal in a recent 4-1 victory over Monaco. "I'm happy with him," Enrique said, noting that adaptation takes time and praising Kvaratskhelia's attitude and training efforts.

Fabian Ruiz echoed Enrique's sentiments about not underestimating Brest despite their lead. "We know that all matches are difficult, especially in the Champions League," Ruiz remarked. He acknowledged Brest's determination and stressed the importance of playing with intent from the start to secure victory.

The upcoming match at Parc des Princes will test PSG's resolve as they aim to maintain their advantage and progress further in the competition while respecting Brest’s capabilities on the field.
