Luis Enrique Acknowledges PSG's Insufficient Level For Champions League Success

Luis Enrique believes Paris Saint-Germain's strong Ligue 1 performance does not translate to success in the Champions League. He emphasises the need for improvement ahead of their upcoming match against Bayern Munich.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) continues to dominate Ligue 1, maintaining their unbeaten streak with a 3-0 victory over Toulouse. This win keeps them six points ahead of Monaco, securing their position at the top with 32 points from 12 matches. Despite this strong league performance, PSG's Champions League journey has been less impressive, as they currently sit 25th in the new 36-team format.

Luis Enrique acknowledges that PSG's domestic success hasn't translated into European competition. With only four points from four Champions League games, the team faces a challenging match against Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena. Enrique emphasises that while Ligue 1 results reflect their quality, improvement is needed for success in Europe.

Luis Enrique on PSG's Champions League Challenges

The coach highlights the importance of seizing key moments in the Champions League, a competition that rewards timely excellence rather than consistency. "A competition like the Champions League is different, is short, fewer games, it does not reward regularity, it rewards being good at the right moments," he stated. He believes entering a Champions League match after a win is beneficial but not decisive.

PSG's domestic form remains strong under Luis Enrique's guidance. They have scored a league-high 36 goals this season, achieving three or more goals in nine out of twelve matches. This offensive prowess mirrors their best start since Thomas Tuchel's tenure in 2018-19 when they had 36 points at this stage.

Friday's triumph was secured by goals from Joao Neves, Beraldo and Vitinha at Parc des Princes. Neves has emerged as a key player this season with two goals and six assists so far. His performance against Toulouse was notable for winning more duels than any other PSG player.

Neves' Rising Influence

Luis Enrique praised Joao Neves for his versatility and contribution to the team. "Joao played the first half as a pivot, which is his usual position," said Enrique. In the second half, Neves adapted to a deeper role to enhance ball distribution from defence. The coach expressed satisfaction with Neves' ability to score and influence play.

As PSG prepares for their upcoming European challenge against Bayern Munich, they aim to carry forward their domestic momentum into continental success. The team's focus remains on improving effectiveness in crucial Champions League moments while maintaining their strong Ligue 1 form.
