Luis Enrique Declines Legend Tag After PSG's Back-to-Back Champions League Triumph

Paris Saint-Germain retained the Champions League after a tense final against Arsenal, winning 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Puskas Arena, as Luis Enrique collected a third title in the competition and moved behind only Carlo Ancelotti, who has five wins.

The victory made PSG just the second club to secure back-to-back Champions League crowns, while Luis Enrique extended a perfect record in the competition’s showpiece, winning all three finals managed so far and posting the highest win rate for any coach with 50 or more matches, at 63.3%.

Luis Enrique rejects legend tag after PSG win

Despite such figures, Luis Enrique rejected suggestions of legendary status and focused instead on the emotion of the night, stating: "Legend? I'm not interested in that" before adding: "I'm mixed. Excitement, fatigue. Everything but this is the best moment of the season. We are still champions, two in a row, it's amazing."

On the pitch, PSG edged Arsenal in the shootout after neither side could find a winner in normal time or extra time, and even though the tie went to penalties, Luis Enrique felt the full campaign performance justified the outcome for PSG over the season’s length in Europe.

Luis Enrique selected the same 10 outfield players who began last season’s 5-0 victory over Inter in the Champions League final, making PSG only the second team to start the same group of outfield players in consecutive finals, matching Real Madrid’s runs in 2017 and 2018.

PSG’s attacking approach across the tournament drew them level with Barcelona’s landmark from the 1999-2000 campaign, with both sides hitting 45 goals in a single European Cup or Champions League season, underlining how often Luis Enrique’s team found ways to break opponents down.

Luis Enrique and PSG Champions League ambitions for next season

Reflecting on the final for TNT Sport, Luis Enrique praised both sides while stressing PSG’s overall level, saying: "It's amazing. I think maybe both teams deserved to win, but the way we played the whole season, I think we deserved to win it."

Looking ahead, Luis Enrique expected PSG to challenge again but underlined the need for squad changes, explaining: "We try to be there again next year. Why not? When you have a lot of quality players, we still need to renew the squad. We need to have to play for the position, get new players, and that is normal for a team like PSG."

The night left PSG celebrating a second straight European crown, while Luis Enrique’s numbers in the Champions League strengthened comparisons with leading coaches such as Carlo Ancelotti, and the focus now turns to whether an adjusted squad can maintain this standard in the next campaign.
