Luis Enrique PSG Work Ethic Highlighted As Beckham Claims He Slept At Training Ground

David Beckham has highlighted Luis Enrique’s intense work habits at Paris Saint-Germain, saying the coach almost lived at the training centre in the first season. The comments come as PSG reach a second straight Champions League final and continue their push for another Ligue 1 title.

PSG earned a 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich on Wednesday, securing a 6-5 aggregate win and another Champions League final place. The French side will face Premier League leaders Arsenal in Budapest on May 30, as PSG chase back-to-back European crowns.

Luis Enrique slept at PSG training ground

Beckham, who played briefly for PSG before retiring, spoke on CBS' Beckham and Friends Live about Luis Enrique’s influence. Beckham said the coach’s hard work has shaped a tight squad. Beckham also shared what PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi told Beckham about Luis Enrique’s early months.

Beckham said: "That's how Luis Enrique has built them for the last few years and he has built this team that are so together." Beckham linked that unity directly to the coach’s daily behaviour at the club’s training base and the standards set for every player.

Luis Enrique took charge of PSG in 2023 and oversaw a major shift in squad profile. Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe all departed as PSG moved away from a Galactico-style approach. In their place, Luis Enrique has assembled a largely youthful group that is strong across the pitch.

Describing Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s account, Beckham added: "I spoke to the president Nasser [Al-Khelaifi] at PSG and he said for the first year of Luis Enrique going, he virtually slept every night at the new training facility, working on how he wants the team to look, how he wants the team to play, who he wants, where are we going to go, what the future looks like."

Beckham continued with more detail on the president’s view: "The president, Nasser, just said he has never seen anything like it. His work ethic and what he wants from his team, he wants them all on a level par, all to want the same thing, bringing these young players through. But he also wants players that are just going to run and not stop and that is what he has got, that is what he has built."

With PSG also on course to retain the Ligue 1 title, Luis Enrique’s methods appear to be delivering across competitions. The focus on fitness, collective effort and young players has created a group that fits the coach’s demands while keeping PSG among Europe’s leading contenders.
