Lukaku isn't doing enough to justify his price tag: Shearer

Bengaluru, December 12: Romelu Lukaku might have scored 13 goals in all competitions this season for Manchester United, however, he is yet to justify his price tag, according to Premier league all-time top scorer Alan Shearer.

The Belgian made a £75million move from Everton this Summer and appeared to be a solid buy for the Red Devils when he burst into the scene with 11 goals in his opening 10 games. However, he has netted just twice in his last 14 matches in all competitions and his goal count has dried up massively.

The former Chelsea player has often been criticised for his inability to produce magic during the big games and this season also the forward has failed to make any impact against the top six teams.

In his whole Premier league career, statistically, Lukau has only scored four times in 40 Premier League appearances against the so-called top six teams which is pretty poor.

In the weekend's derby match, the striker missed a big opportunity to level the game in the dying minutes of the match and unwittingly provided two opportunities to the rivals, which was eventually converted by City to win the match 2-1.

And now in a recent chat on Match of the Day 2, the greatest strikers of Premier League era Alan Shearer has launched a scathing attack on Romelu Lukaku in the wake of his poor form.

“No one was asking these questions earlier on in the season when Lukaku was scoring 11 goals in his first 10 games," Shearer said.

“No one was asking the question of Mourinho then and whether he had improved Lukaku.

“He's not doing enough in games and, I hate saying it, to justify his fee.

“He looks to be lacking in confidence, two in 14 now, but in his defence with some of the balls and some of the service he was feeding on scraps.

“Everything seems a second or two too slow and by the time he's made his mind up, it's gone.”

Lukaku is expected to be seen in United jersey again this midweek in a home encounter against struggling Bournemouth and after having gone through a difficult time, he will surely look to get back to scoring goals.
