Lyon Dominates Galatasaray While Wolfsburg Falls To Roma In Women's Champions League Opener

Lyon began their Women's Champions League campaign with a commanding win over Galatasaray, led by Kadidiatou Diani's two goals. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg suffered a narrow defeat against Roma, highlighting the competitive nature of Group A.

Lyon began their Women's Champions League journey with a commanding performance against Galatasaray, thanks to Kadidiatou Diani's two goals. Galatasaray, the first Turkish team to reach the group stage, struggled against the eight-time champions during Tuesday's Group A match at Groupama Stadium. Diani, last season's top scorer with eight goals, continued her impressive form by scoring twice around Vanessa Gilles' goal just before half-time.

Lyon's attacking prowess was evident as they attempted 40 shots, marking the third-highest total in a single match in the competition's history. The only higher totals were recorded this season: Barcelona had 41 shots against Rosenborg, and Lyon themselves managed 47 against St. Polten in March. Lyon have an impressive home record in the Champions League, losing only three of their last 28 matches (W23 D2) and remaining unbeaten in their last six (W5 D1), scoring at least two goals in each game.

Lyon Triumphs Over Galatasaray in UWCL Opener

The French side has won 13 out of their 19 group-stage games since the format was introduced in 2021. This gives them a win rate of 68.4%, which is the second highest after Barcelona's 89%. Meanwhile, in another Group A encounter, Wolfsburg suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Roma. Manuela Giugliano scored the decisive penalty for Roma in the 14th minute at Stadio Tre Fontane.

Giugliano has been instrumental for Roma, contributing directly to 16 goals in her 13 group-stage appearances (eight goals and eight assists). Despite Wolfsburg's efforts, which included 23 shots and hitting the woodwork through Marina Hegering, they couldn't find an equaliser. Roma ended their four-game winless streak in the Champions League with this victory.

Wolfsburg, who were runners-up to Barcelona last season, had numerous opportunities but failed to capitalise on them. They managed 33 touches inside Roma's box but couldn't convert these chances into goals. This result highlights Roma's resilience as they secured a crucial win early in the group stage.

Lyon's dominance continues to be evident as they maintain their stronghold on European football. Their consistent performances make them formidable opponents for any team aiming for success in this prestigious tournament.
