Lyon Marseille Defeat Injustice: Fonseca Insists The Better Team Lost

Paulo Fonseca says Lyon were denied a fair result after their 3-2 defeat to Marseille at the Stade Velodrome. Despite an early Tolisso goal and a later equaliser, Aubameyang struck late to complete a comeback. Fonseca questioned officiating and emphasised Lyon's performance and character despite the setback.

Olympique Lyonnais fell to a 3-2 defeat at Marseille in Ligue 1, despite leading twice in a dramatic match at Stade Velodrome. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice in the final 10 minutes, including a winner in added time, leaving Paulo Fonseca furious and describing the result as a clear injustice after a strong Lyon display.

Lyon scored inside three minutes through Corentin Tolisso and then again late on via Remi Himbert, yet still left without a point. Igor Paixao’s equaliser and Aubameyang’s late double turned the game for Marseille, who collected a first league victory under Habib Beye and closed the gap on the clubs above them.

Lyon coach calls Marseille win unjust

The visitors started fast when Tolisso finished in the third minute, putting Lyon ahead and silencing most of Stade Velodrome. Early in the second half, Tolisso thought a second goal stood, but an offside decision cancelled it. Almost immediately, Paixao beat Dominik Greif with a precise shot to bring Marseille level.

As the match moved into the final quarter-hour, Lyon regained control when Himbert scored with 14 minutes remaining, restoring the lead at 2-1. Marseille responded with pressure and higher tempo, and Aubameyang equalised before the 90th minute, then struck again in the first minute of stoppage time to complete the turnaround.

Lyon created 12 shots and finished with an expected goals figure of 1.2, reflecting several clear situations but limited efficiency. Marseille attempted 18 shots and posted an xG of 2, underlining their late attacking surge. The hosts’ comeback also ended a long wait for a win in a game they trailed entering the last 10 minutes.

Team Goals Shots xG
Marseille 3 18 2.0
Lyon 2 12 1.2

The result continued a negative mini-run for Lyon. Fonseca’s side have now lost two straight matches in all competitions, going down 1-3 against Strasbourg before this 3-2 defeat. That small sequence already exceeds their previous 17 games combined, where they recorded 15 wins, one draw and just one loss in a consistent stretch.

Lyon’s latest setback left the club eight points behind second-placed Lens in the Ligue 1 table, increasing pressure before the next fixtures. For Marseille, this victory under Beye provided both three points and a psychological lift. The team had not previously won any competition match in which they were behind after the 80th minute since a 3-2 win over Monaco on 13 November 2022.

Lyon vs Marseille: Fonseca questions injustice after defeat

Fonseca’s main anger centred on Tolisso’s ruled-out goal soon after half-time, which came moments before Paixao’s leveller. The coach felt that incident changed the match. Lyon’s staff and players argued that the decision swung momentum towards Marseille at a stage when Lyon appeared in control and were creating the clearer openings.

Speaking after the match, Fonseca expressed strong disappointment with the situation around the touchline and in recent weeks. "No regrets. I have to say that I am here because I have a lot of respect for your work and the people who love football," Fonseca said. "But I don't want to be here. Because I was sanctioned for nine months without being able to speak. I don't want to talk."

Fonseca still underlined the performance of the squad despite the loss. "What do I remember? It's that the better team lost, the team that played better today, that created chances. An injustice? Totally. I think the team showed today that they will continue to play well, with courage. We have to continue like this."

When asked again about the disallowed Tolisso effort and the wider officiating, Fonseca declined to explain further. "You have to make this analysis. Because I can't do it," Fonseca added. "I have the impression that you watched another match. That's why I don't want to waste time commenting."

Lyon vs Marseille: Beye and Aubameyang drive Marseille response

Aubameyang’s brace not only delivered victory but also set a new age mark in this fixture. At 36 years and 256 days, Aubameyang became the oldest player to score in a Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Lyon. Beyond the goals, Aubameyang’s work rate in pressing and defensive phases stood out for Beye on the touchline.

Beye, who replaced Roberto De Zerbi last month after a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, highlighted the platform inherited from the previous coach. "My predecessor put a lot of quality into this team," Beye told reporters. "We're not here to deconstruct, we're here to bring certain elements of methodology, of a game plan that requires a little more verticality, counter-pressing. Maybe less control, which means that we are able to release the ball a little more. But the work that has been done before is of high quality. My job is to make sure that this team continues to perform."

Beye then focused on Aubameyang’s influence and the crowd’s role. "Aubameyang, it's incredible, especially the love he has for the game, the presence he has in front of goal. He doesn't count the efforts. Tonight, we had Amine Gouiri, who was a bit short. Auba stayed for 95 minutes, he gave, he pressed, he defended. You also have to talk about this exceptional audience, which gives you an extra soul. I'm very happy for Auba, he deserves it."

This match left Marseille with renewed confidence and gave Beye a statement result early in the tenure, while Lyon departed frustrated after another narrow defeat. The late drama at Stade Velodrome altered the direction of the contest and also shaped the immediate outlook for both clubs in the Ligue 1 race.
