Lyon aim to strengthen their top-four push in Ligue 1 when Paulo Fonseca’s side host Nice, with the coach insisting the target is points rather than records after a run of six straight league victories moved Lyon third and opened the chance to move five points clear of Marseille.
Fonseca again downplayed talk of milestones, even as Lyon ride a seven-match winning sequence in all competitions and prepare to face Nice without suspended forward Endrick, stressing that the club’s long-term targets and overall season outcome matter more than any statistical landmark.

Fonseca explained the mindset around Lyon’s recent surge, saying: "It's [records] not a goal for me. I love having that possibility, but the most important thing is what we could do at the end of the season," while also accepting that the league, Europa League and Coupe de France schedules naturally bring pressure.
The coach also admitted that Lyon’s exact figures are not his main concern, stating: "I know we have long winning streaks, but I don't know the exact statistics. We're high in the table, we have the Europa League and the Coupe de France, so there will be pressure. We need to approach this moment with a lot of composure."
Lyon’s strong position has been built on a tight back line, with only 20 goals conceded from 21 Ligue 1 fixtures, a record Fonseca links to collective effort as Lyon prepare for Nice with one of the division’s strongest defensive numbers and a structure he believes is grounded in character and daily work.
Fonseca described the defensive rebuild in detail, saying: "The character of this team, the way all the players are willing to work defensively, that's the main reason [for their solidity]. Before the season started, I studied what was happening in football, what our strengths were, and where we needed to improve. I understood that to improve defensively, we needed to progress individually. We worked a lot on our defensive line and our pressing. But the main explanation is the team's character and how we work together defensively. We worked a lot on the individual aspect, one-on-one situations, how to defend in those situations."
Nice arrive at Groupama Stadium in 14th place on 23 points, nine clear of the relegation play-off, and unbeaten in three league games, including a goalless draw with Monaco, yet those steady results contrast with Lyon’s momentum and highlight the challenge facing Francesco Farioli’s squad.
Recent meetings show mixed trends, as Lyon had stitched together three successive Ligue 1 wins over Nice before Les Aiglons took a 3-2 victory in the most recent clash, though Lyon have failed to score in just one of their last 17 home league matches against Nice, a 1-0 defeat in August 2018.
Lyon forward Pavel Suic Sulc struck his 10th Ligue 1 goal of the season in the 1-0 success over Nantes, becoming the fourth Czech player to hit double figures in a single French top-flight campaign, following Antonin Tichy, Karel Michlovsky and Lubos Kubik, underlining his importance before facing Nice.
Nice will look to Elye Wahi for a response, as Wahi has scored more Ligue 1 goals against Lyon than any other opponent with eight, including four at Groupama Stadium for Montpellier in May 2023, while this season Wahi has three goals from four league starts, giving the best minutes-per-goal rate in the Nice squad.
Early-match patterns could be decisive, with Nice having allowed eight goals in the opening 15 minutes of Ligue 1 games, at least three more than any other side, while Lyon share the best defensive record in that spell and have conceded only once, in the reverse fixture between these teams.
Under Fonseca, Lyon have scored in all 26 home matches in all competitions, producing 59 goals, and the Portuguese coach has seen a team fail to score in just one home fixture across 71 games in charge of French clubs, numbers that support the prediction that Lyon are favourites against Nice.
That attacking consistency, combined with Lyon’s current six-game league winning run, their best sequence since an eight-match streak from March to May 2018, contrasts with the earlier stretch of only two wins in nine Ligue 1 outings, and helps explain the model forecasts favouring a home success.
{TABLE_1}| Outcome | OPTA win probability |
|---|---|
| Lyon win | 55.7% |
| Draw | 22.7% |
| Nice win | 21.6% |
Overall data points towards a Lyon victory against Nice in Ligue 1, with Fonseca’s side combining a strong defensive platform, reliable home scoring and recent form, while Nice’s modest league position, early-goal vulnerability and dependence on Wahi’s threat frame this fixture as a difficult away assignment.
