Catarina Macario's Penalties Propel Chelsea To Perfect Record In Women's Champions League Group B

Catarina Macario scored two penalties to help Chelsea come from behind and defeat Real Madrid 2-1. This victory secured Chelsea's perfect record in the Women's Champions League Group B, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals.

Chelsea's Catarina Macario made a significant impact off the bench, scoring two penalties to help her team overturn a deficit and secure a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Women's Champions League. This win ensured Chelsea topped Group B. Despite their recent draw against Leicester City in the Women's Super League, Chelsea avoided their first loss under coach Sonia Bompastor.

Real Madrid initially took the lead after just seven minutes when Caroline Weir's shot deflected off Lucy Bronze. This goal gave Madrid hope of matching Chelsea's 15 points, which would have required head-to-head records to separate them. However, Bompastor made a tactical change at halftime by bringing on Macario for Mayra Ramirez.

Macario's Penalties Secure Chelsea's Top Spot

Macario almost made an immediate impact with a potential equaliser, but it was ruled offside. Her persistence paid off when she won a penalty after being fouled by Olga Carmona in the 51st minute. Macario confidently converted the spot-kick to level the score at 1-1.

Just five minutes later, Carmona was penalised again for handling Wieke Kaptein's flick. This allowed Macario to score her second penalty, sending the ball high into the net and securing Chelsea's victory. With this win, Chelsea maintained their perfect record in the group stage.

Chelsea's flawless performance in all six Champions League matches means they advance as Group B winners. They will face a runner-up from another group in the quarter-finals scheduled for March. Meanwhile, Twente concluded their campaign with a decisive home win against Celtic.

In another Group B match, Celtic ended their campaign without any points after losing 3-0 to Twente in the Netherlands. Kayleigh van Dooren scored first for Twente after 20 minutes. Own goals from Lisa Rodgers and Natalie Ross added to Celtic's woes before halftime as Twente finished third in the group with this victory.
