Harry Maguire has emphasised that Manchester United cannot justify any poor performances this season after failing to secure European football. Last season, the team ended 15th in the Premier League, marking their lowest top-flight finish since their relegation in 1974. They also missed out on Champions League qualification after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
United will only participate in domestic competitions for the 2025-26 season, starting with a league match against Arsenal on August 17. The team has already tasted some success by winning the Premier League Summer Series, where they faced Bournemouth, West Ham, and Everton. Maguire believes that without European commitments and with a full pre-season under Ruben Amorim, there is no reason to repeat last season's struggles.

Maguire expressed his desire to contribute to a successful team this season. "I just want to be part of a successful team this season," he told MUTV. Reflecting on last year, he noted it was challenging for everyone individually and collectively as a club. He stressed that this season offers ample preparation time for Premier League matches.
The absence of European fixtures allows United more time to focus on domestic games. Maguire highlighted the importance of being ready and prepared for these matches. "We're going to have a lot of time to prepare for the Premier League games, and we've got to make sure we're ready," he added.
Maguire is committed to being fit and available for the team. "So, for myself, it's making sure I'm available, I'm fit, I'm ready to go, and give everything I can to this team and this club," he said. Amorim has emphasised the need for more training time on the pitch.
This pre-season has been demanding physically but focused mainly on tactics rather than fitness drills. Maguire appreciated the tactical drills over mere physical exercises like running around poles. He described it as an enjoyable yet educational pre-season where players learned more about their system.
The squad now understands their playing system better and aims to apply these lessons in upcoming matches. The focus remains on translating pre-season learnings into effective performance during games.
