Kolkata, August 25: Former Chelsea legend Claude Makelele has advised his successor N'Golo Kante to slow down in the field in a bid to avoid possible burnout.

Kante has turned out to be the most important player in Antonio Conte's side since leaving Leicester City in 2016, with the midfielder being entrusted with a comparable role that of Makelele, covering the defence and attack at the same time.

And Makelele who was regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time has suggested that the 26-year-old should figure out how to save his energy this term or risk wearing out because of the demands of playing more competitions this year, in the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup.

Makelele told Goal: "He is a good player. It is difficult to find some who loves running for everything like him.

"He plays for his partners. He is unbelievable. He is also clever and very serious. Around him, he has good people to help him to be a great player.

"It might be difficult for him when he gets older. He can't run like that for 90 minutes. I think he will one day need to change the way he plays. He could use his intelligence even more, be selective about his runs.

"If you want to play every four days in the Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League, he might need to change how much he runs a little. However, Chelsea signed him to play the way that he plays with his running. So that's the problem.

"It is important for him to understand to conserve his energy. He is still young, when he is older, he will understand how to change the way that he plays."

For the first time in his career, Kante will be expected to play two games in a week after their participation in Champions league and the Chelsea manager will be surely hoping that midfielder does really notice Makelele's words and can perform as effective as he was last season.
