The second Group D match on Day 4 of AFC Asian Cup gets underway at Al Janoub Stadium in Al-Wakrah (Qatar) as Malaysia begin their campaign against Jordan on Monday (January 15). Malaysia has not participated in Asia's premier continental event since 2007, while Jordan has advanced to four of the previous five AFC Asian Cup editions.
South Korea are the overwhelming favorite to win the group, so Malaysia will enter the competition as the underdog to advance from Group E. Nonetheless, considering that Bahrain are also in their group and three teams advance from four of the six groups, there's a chance that both of these countries will end up in the knockout stages.
The fact that Malaysia will play the lower-ranked countries before playing South Korea in their last group match gives them a small advantage. A pair of wins would ensure their spot in the round of 16 but even three or four points would offer them a remarkable opportunity to advance past the group stage for the first time in their history.
Since 1980, the Malayan Tigers have not qualified for the Asian Cup, but they did so automatically in 2007 as co-hosts. Former Hong Kong boss Kim Pan-gon has solidified himself as a tremendously popular figure in Malaysia as a result, although the 54-year-old may have an unpleasant time of things when he takes on his native country on the final matchday.
Since losing to Thailand 3-0 more than a year ago, only Tajikistan has defeated Malaysia during a lengthy stretch of respectable results. They will therefore have a sincere hope of catching Jordan off guard on Monday.
That will be especially true if they learn about Jordan's recent performance, which included an impressive 2-1 victory over the hosts and defending champions of the Asian Cup last week to snap a seven-match losing streak.
Akram Afif had opened the score after just 11 minutes from the penalty spot, but goals from Yazan Al-Naimat and Ali Olwan in the second half flipped the friendly on its head. Hussein Ammouta's team desperately needed the lift after drawing with Tajikistan and Iraq and losing to Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Norway.
