Man City's Mentality Shift Drives Women's Super League Title Challenge, Says Khadija Shaw

Khadija Shaw attributes Manchester City's successful start to the Women's Super League season to a crucial mentality shift. After overcoming last season's setbacks, City aims for the title with strong performances and a focus on teamwork.

Manchester City has climbed to the top of the Women's Super League, thanks to a change in mindset, according to Khadija Shaw. After Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday, City capitalised by defeating Everton 2-1. Vivianne Miedema and Shaw scored on either side of Kelly Gago's goal. This victory marks City's longest winning streak since November 2023.

City's current run of seven consecutive victories follows an opening-day loss to Chelsea. This is their best form since a 14-match winning streak from November 2023 to April 2024. Last season, they finished fourth after Gareth Taylor was replaced by interim manager Nick Cushing midway through the campaign.

Man City's Mentality Shift in WSL Title Race

The Opta supercomputer now considers City as strong contenders for the title this season. However, they are still behind Chelsea, who have a 71.3% chance of finishing first, while City's chances stand at 24.7%. Despite these odds, Shaw remains optimistic about their prospects.

Khadija Shaw is currently the top scorer in the WSL with five goals. She attributes their resurgence to Andree Jeglertz's influence in reigniting their title ambitions. "We had a setback last year, no Champions League, and we sat down as a group at the end of last season and had an honest conversation between ourselves," said Shaw.

Shaw emphasises that this season's focus is on securing three points in every match. She believes that last season's shortcomings were due to lapses in mentality during crucial games. This year, she insists that maintaining a strong mindset is crucial for success.

Offensive Strength

This season, Manchester City has been prolific in front of goal, scoring 20 times so far. They also hold the second-best goal difference in the league at +11, just behind Manchester United's +13. Their attacking prowess has been a key factor in their current position at the top of the table.

The team's improved performance can be attributed to both tactical adjustments and a renewed focus on mental resilience. As they continue their campaign, maintaining this balance will be essential for sustaining their title challenge.

As Manchester City aims for success this season, they will need to keep up their momentum and focus on each game individually. With strong performances and strategic planning, they hope to overcome any challenges and achieve their ultimate goal of winning the league title.
