Guardiola Praises Manchester City's Win At Chelsea As Season's Strong Opening

Manchester City overcame Chelsea in a decisive match, marking a strong start to the 2024-25 season. Key players like Erling Haaland shone, with Guardiola highlighting the team's cohesion and strategic play.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed relief and satisfaction after his team defeated Chelsea on Sunday, erasing memories of last season's chaotic 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge. This time, City secured a straightforward victory to start their 2024-25 campaign with three points.

Erling Haaland marked his 100th competitive appearance for City by scoring the opening goal, his 91st for the club. Mateo Kovacic sealed the win six minutes from time with a stunning finish against his former team. Guardiola was pleased with the result, especially given key midfielder Rodri's absence and Phil Foden's limited involvement.

Man City's Strong Start at Chelsea

Guardiola shared his thoughts post-match, stating, "I didn't expect it. We are away from our best so three points is the good news. The bad news is we have 65 games ahead of us." He highlighted the team's familiarity and experience as advantages but acknowledged areas needing improvement.

The manager emphasised the importance of body language and behaviour during challenging moments in defining successful teams. "For me, it is an honour to be in charge of these guys. I'm so fortunate, I could not say more," he added.

Haaland's performance was notable not just for his goal but also for his overall influence on the game. Despite missing a chance for a second goal due to a smart save by Robert Sanchez and having another disallowed due to a foul, Haaland continued to impress.

Over the past three seasons, Haaland has scored 13 Premier League goals in August alone, surpassing Chelsea's total of 11 and Manchester United's nine during the same period.

Kovacic Steps Up

Kovacic's contribution was crucial in Rodri's absence. Guardiola praised him, saying, "Rodri is massively important for us so it's important to have Mateo here because he is an experienced player and a great person. He made a good performance."

City's record without Rodri underscores his significance; they had lost only six of 102 matches when he started since the beginning of the 2022-23 season. In contrast, they suffered as many defeats in just 18 games without him.

City's Winning Streak

Manchester City's victory extended their winning streak in the Premier League to ten matches, each featuring at least two goals. This achievement highlights their consistency and dominance in recent seasons.

@OptaJoe tweeted: "10 - Manchester City have won each of their last 10 Premier League matches, scoring at least two goals in each victory. Indeed, they have more 10-game win streaks than any other side in the competition (7). Humming." pic.twitter.com/2aD9VngDfI

This impressive run reflects City's ability to maintain high standards over an extended period, setting them apart from their competitors.

Guardiola warned against relying too heavily on statistics: "Be careful with statistics with us because we break it." His comment underscores City's unpredictable nature and potential to defy expectations.

The match against Chelsea demonstrated City's resilience and depth, even when key players are unavailable. As they embark on another demanding season, Guardiola will look to build on this solid start while addressing areas for improvement.
