Manchester City Women Beat Manchester United 3-0 As Miedema Doubles Up To Close On WSL Title

Manchester City Women overwhelmed Manchester United 3-0 in a dominant derby performance at Old Trafford. Vivianne Miedema scored twice, extending City’s advantage in the WSL title race as they near clinching the crown, with Arsenal remaining as the last realistic challenger.

Manchester City moved within touching distance of the Women's Super League title after a convincing 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The result means City now need a maximum of five points from their final three league matches, while Arsenal remain the only side with any realistic chance of stopping a title celebration.

The win also ensured City will finish above Manchester United this season, underlining the power shift in this local rivalry. For United, it marked a first league loss since November, when City also won 3-0 in the reverse fixture, ending a nine-match unbeaten run in the Women's Super League.

City dominated from the opening minutes and quickly pushed United back. Lauren Hemp struck the crossbar from long range as the pressure built. Vivianne Miedema then settled any early nerves with two headed goals in the space of minutes, punishing slack defending and giving City full control before the half-hour mark.

Miedema's opener came in the 17th minute when the forward escaped a marker to meet Alex Greenwood's corner with a firm header. Almost immediately from City's next attack, Kerstin Casparij delivered from the right and Miedema again rose highest, guiding the ball beyond Phallon Tullis-Joyce as United struggled to organise defensively.

Those two first-half goals took Miedema to 10 league strikes for the campaign and secured a notable place in competition history. The Netherlands international is now the first player to reach double figures in five separate Women's Super League seasons, underlining consistent scoring across different eras and teams.

Before joining City, Miedema hit 22 goals for Arsenal in 2018-19, followed by 16 in 2019-20, 18 in 2020-21 and 14 in 2021-22. This season is the first time the WSL's all-time leading scorer has reached at least 10 league goals since leaving the Gunners, showing a return to peak form.

The scoreline reflected City's superiority, but advanced numbers also underlined the gap between the sides. City attempted 15 shots to United's 10 and led the expected goals measure 2.03 to 0.45. Andree Jeglertz's team also dominated possession, completing far more passes and dictating the tempo across both halves.

City enjoyed 62.4% of the ball and completed 496 passes, while United managed 282. The result gave City a second league double over United, having also won 3-0 earlier this season and previously doing the double in 2023-24. United, often chasing shadows, struggled to disrupt City's rhythm or sustain attacks.

United could have trailed by more at half-time. Rebecca Knaak had a powerful header ruled out for a foul by Yui Hasegawa, a decision that appeared harsh on replays. Khadija Shaw also forced chances, going close twice before the break, as City pressed for a third goal that did not immediately come.

That third arrived four minutes into the second half after a fluent move released Hemp down the left. Hemp drove into space and sent a low cross to the far post, where an unmarked Casparij finished calmly. Late on, Shaw almost added a fourth but dragged a shot narrowly wide of Tullis-Joyce's right-hand upright.

United tired as the game wore on, following Wednesday's 3-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, and could not recover momentum. City left Old Trafford with another 3-0 derby success, a firm grip on the Women's Super League title race, and a clear sense that the remaining fixtures now look firmly under control.
