Man Utd Change Under Carrick Replacing Amorim Delivers Strong Top-Four Push, Fernandes States

Manchester United’s surge to third in the Premier League has strengthened under Michael Carrick, and Bruno Fernandes believes the mid-season change in the dugout has been central to that progress. Fernandes feels the club needed a new direction when Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January.

Since Carrick took charge, United have recorded 11 league victories, more than any other Premier League side in that period. Only Manchester City, with 31 goals, have scored more than United’s 30 under Carrick, who has quickly established an efficient, attacking approach.

Carrick’s points return has stood out across the division. The manager has collected 2.25 points per match, with 11 wins, three draws and two defeats from 16 Premier League games. No other manager in this season’s competition has a better points-per-game figure.

That level of consistency compares favourably with Manchester United’s recent history in the Premier League. Carrick’s current league average is the strongest by any United manager across a season since Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in 2012-13, when Ferguson’s side averaged 2.34 points per match.

The situation was very different earlier in the season. Ruben Amorim left Manchester United with the team in sixth place and struggling for rhythm. Amorim registered only 15 wins from 47 Premier League fixtures, producing a win rate of just 31.9 per cent.

No other permanent or interim Manchester United manager in Premier League history has recorded a lower win percentage. Even Ralf Rangnick, who managed United for 24 league games, won 10 of those fixtures, giving a win rate of 42 per cent. Nine other United managers all passed 50 per cent.

Fernandes reflected on the decision to replace Amorim when speaking after receiving the Footballer of the Year prize at the Football Writers’ Awards. He explained that the squad’s objectives remained clear at the time of the change, but there were also deeper reasons behind it.

Fernandes told Sky Sports News: "When the change was made, we were not far from what we wanted [to achieve] this season. That was the top four. At the same time, it was in need of change by the club for different reasonsI won't be naming them now. Me and the boss [Michael Carrick] spoke before, and we said we can play better, we want to play better. We didn't achieve the level we want to have, but since he came, the results show we were one of the best teams in the Premier League."

On the pitch, Fernandes has been central to Manchester United’s upturn during Carrick’s spell. Since the 44-year-old coach returned to Old Trafford, no player in the Premier League has produced more goal contributions than Fernandes, who has 15 in that time.

Fernandes has also led the league for creativity since Carrick’s arrival. The Portugal international has fashioned 76 chances in the top flight during that period. Fernandes reached 20 assists for the season with his latest contribution against Nottingham Forest, moving level with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The playmaker is now one assist away from setting a new Premier League record for a single campaign. Henry achieved 20 assists in 2002-03, with De Bruyne later matching that mark in 2019-20. Fernandes can surpass both figures if he creates one more goal.

Fernandes praised Carrick’s influence on both the dressing room and his own form. "Michael came in with a big personality but also with a lot of calmness about what he needed to do to bring the best out of the team, and he did it in the best way," he added. "For myself, it was a great end of the season. I got to really enjoy the football I was playing and, most importantly, the team was getting results."

United’s season closes with a Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday. Manchester United are aiming to complete a league double over Brighton for the first time since the 2020-21 season, which would further underline the improvement under Carrick and the influence of Fernandes.
