Bruno Fernandes Urgently Aims To Seal Manchester United Champions League Qualification

Manchester United tightened their grip on a Champions League return with a narrow 1-0 win at Chelsea, highlighted by another decisive display from Bruno Fernandes. The result keeps Manchester United third in the Premier League on 58 points, 10 ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, with only five league matches remaining.

The victory strengthens Manchester United’s position with Opta’s supercomputer rating their chances of Champions League qualification at 98.4 percent, as the top five qualify this season. Fernandes assisted Matheus Cunha’s first-half winner and now has 18 Premier League assists, leaving Fernandes just two short of the single-season record.

Bruno Fernandes Pushes Man Utd to CL Qualification

He told TNT Sports:It's an amazing feeling for us, we had to bounce back, we had two games that we didn't win. We knew we had to make a great performance because Chelsea are a good side. It's important for us because our aim is to finish in thetop four, so creating some distance is perfect for us. I feel three points closer, we have another game that we have to win. We know we need points to get that place secured and we will do everything possible to be as quick as possible.

Fernandes is closing in on one of the Premier League’s standout assisting records. Only three players have created more goals in a single season than Fernandes’ current 18. Those players are Kevin De Bruyne, Thierry Henry and Mesut Ozil, whose tallies place Fernandes among elite creators.

Fernandes has also been especially productive away from Old Trafford, with 10 of those assists coming on the road. That output makes Fernandes one of four players to reach double figures for away assists in a Premier League campaign, alongside Muzzy Izzet, Cesc Fabregas and Mohamed Salah in previous seasons.

United’s success at Stamford Bridge came despite a defensive crisis, as Manchester United travelled without four senior centre-backs. Even so, the patched-up side restricted an out-of-form Chelsea before Fernandes set up Cunha’s strike late in the first half, which proved enough for an important 1-0 Premier League victory.

I say every time I want to do better than the season before, Fernandes added. I want to improve my game overall. I need to improve every week because I want to become a better player and end my career as the best as possible.

Manchester United now have a short break before returning to Premier League action on April 27, when Brentford visit Old Trafford. With Champions League qualification almost secured statistically, the remaining fixtures offer Fernandes and Manchester United further chances to chase records and strengthen their league position.
