Man Utd Goalless Draw At Sunderland Praised By Carrick As A Positive Result

Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, ending a long scoring run but adding another point after securing Champions League qualification with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool, while both sides created chances in an open Premier League contest.

Sunderland pressed strongly and often looked the sharper side, with Noah Sadiki and Brian Brobbey frequently testing Senne Lammens, and Lutsharel Geertruida striking the post late on, before Matheus Cunha was denied by Robin Roefs in stoppage time during United’s best opportunity.

The result moved Sunderland to 48 points with a balanced record of W12 D12 L12, a tally bettered in the Premier League only in 1999-00, when they finished with 58 points, and in 2000-01, when they collected 57 points across the campaign.

This season’s draw was part of a wider league pattern, becoming the 27th goalless match of the Premier League campaign, which equals the combined totals from the previous two seasons, when there were 11 such games in 2023-24 and 16 more in 2024-25.

United’s failure to score also ended a productive run in front of goal, as the team had found the net in 23 consecutive Premier League fixtures since a 1-0 home defeat to Everton in November, yet they managed only 0.66 expected goals against Sunderland, with Cunha’s 93rd-minute effort their sole shot on target.

Michael Carrick acknowledged that the performance lacked fluency, but highlighted the value of the point away from home, especially at a venue where Sunderland have maintained a strong record throughout the season, and where keeping a clean sheet required focus against several dangerous attacks.

Carrick told Premier League Productions: It is a positive result in terms of the point. Was it going to be a perfect game? We weren't expecting a perfect game. It is what it is. It's not something we need to overthink and it's hard to be negative. It was just one of those games. A decent enough point and we nearly won it at the end. This is a tough place to come. They've had a good record here all season. We'll take the point, a clean sheet is always good to get. As a team we could have been a bit better but we know what the boys can do. Everyone has contributed in such a good way, I'm pleased with the overall connection, communication and willingness to work for each other today. We gave everything this week. We've got our last home game of the season that we will work towards this week. We look forward to it. It's important to finish the season strong and I think today is a positive note for us.

The United head coach also praised the group’s mentality in the wider context of a demanding week, after the emotional 3-2 win over Liverpool that confirmed Champions League qualification for next season, stressing that the squad’s work rate and togetherness remained at a high level.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris felt the hosts had done enough to claim more than a point, reflecting on their missed chances but also the progress made in their first Premier League season after eight years away from the division, especially given their disappointment with a home draw against Manchester United.

Le Bris told BBC Match of the Day: We probably created enough chances to win the game, but chances don't always mean goals. When we got the momentum and the chances, we weren't clinical enough. The Premier League is very demanding, so when you don't score, you are always on the edge. But overall, I think the lads did well. This is a good sign, especially for our first year in the Premier League after eight years. It's good, it shows our season has been excellent so far if we're disappointed at home after a draw against Manchester United. It's a good sign for the club.

Key numbers from the match and wider season help underline the balance of the contest and its place within current Premier League trends.

Both Manchester United and Sunderland therefore left with reasons for satisfaction and frustration, as the visitors preserved a clean sheet and momentum before their final home fixture of the season, while the hosts extended an encouraging campaign that now sits close to their strongest Premier League points totals.
