Manchester United strengthened second place in the Women’s Super League with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City at King Power Stadium, trimming Manchester City’s advantage at the top to eight points as Julia Zigiotti and Elisabeth Terland delivered the key moments in a match United controlled for long spells.

The result extended Marc Skinner’s side’s winning run in the league to three matches, their best sequence since March last year, while Leicester stayed only two points clear of the relegation zone after another home defeat against United, who have now won every one of their five WSL away fixtures against Leicester.

United asserted dominance early and were rewarded in the 13th minute when Julia Zigiotti broke the deadlock. Zigiotti cut inside from the left and swung in a teasing delivery, and with Olivia Clark distracted by Lea Schuller’s forward movement, the ball drifted untouched beyond the goalkeeper and inside the far post.

The visitors pushed hard for a second before half-time. Anna Sandberg sent a rising effort over the crossbar, then Melvine Malard weaved past two Leicester defenders and struck low, only for Clark to push the shot away. Despite sustained pressure and several promising moves, United reached the interval with only a single-goal cushion.

Leicester improved after the restart, helped by the introduction of Noemie Mouchon, whose direct running asked fresh questions of the United defence. Phallon Tullis-Joyce had to intervene to deny Mouchon, preserving United’s narrow advantage as the hosts searched for a route back into the contest without creating many clear chances.

Any hope of a late Leicester recovery disappeared on 88 minutes. Zigiotti pressed aggressively and robbed Sam Tierney after a pass from Clark went short. Zigiotti slipped the ball into Elisabeth Terland, who glided away from two defenders and finished calmly, giving United a two-goal lead and effectively deciding the match.

Leicester managed seven attempts worth just 0.37 expected goals, while United generated 1.0 expected goals from 14 shots, reflecting better chance quality.
