Manchester City Overcomes Crystal Palace With De Bruyne's Leadership In Thrilling 5-2 Victory

Kevin De Bruyne played a crucial role as Manchester City rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Crystal Palace 5-2, boosting their Champions League hopes. This match marked a significant turnaround for City and highlighted De Bruyne's exceptional performance.

Kevin De Bruyne played a crucial role in Manchester City's comeback victory over Crystal Palace, winning 5-2 at the Etihad Stadium. The Citizens' captain, who recently announced his departure at season's end, scored and assisted to strengthen their Champions League hopes. Despite early goals from Eberechi Eze and Chris Richards putting Palace ahead, De Bruyne's 25-yard free-kick reignited City's chances.

Omar Marmoush equalised before halftime, setting the stage for City's impressive second-half display. Mateo Kovacic scored from the edge of the box to give City a 3-2 lead. James McAtee then capitalised on Ederson's long pass to score City's fourth goal. Nico O'Reilly added a late deflected volley, sealing Palace's first away defeat in 11 Premier League matches.

De Bruyne Leads Manchester City to Victory

This match marked only the third instance in Premier League history where a team won by three goals after trailing by two. Previously, Manchester United and Arsenal achieved this against Tottenham in April 2009 and February 2012 respectively. It was also City's first league win after trailing by two or more goals since their 4-2 victory over Spurs in January 2023.

De Bruyne's free-kick was his 30th Premier League goal from outside the box, making him the sixth player to reach this milestone. His assist for Kovacic means he has now scored and assisted in 28 different Premier League games. Only Mohamed Salah (42), Wayne Rooney (36), Thierry Henry (32), and Alan Shearer (31) have done so more often.

Ederson provided his fourth league assist of the season with a precise diagonal pass to McAtee, who scored on his first start in the division. This assist was one of eight by goalkeepers during the 2024-25 season, equalling records set in 1992-93 and 2007-08.

The victory allowed City to leapfrog Newcastle United and Chelsea into fourth place as they await their Sunday fixtures. Meanwhile, Oliver Glasner's side remains in eleventh position following this defeat.

The last time Crystal Palace lost a Premier League match after leading by two or more goals was also against City at Etihad Stadium back in August 2022.
