Manchester City experienced another late setback in the Champions League, losing to Real Madrid. Erling Haaland initially put City ahead at the Etihad Stadium. However, Kylian Mbappe equalised with a deflected shot around the 60th minute. Haaland restored City's lead with a penalty in the 80th minute, but Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham scored late goals, giving Carlo Ancelotti's team an advantage in the first leg.
City have now failed to secure victory in a Champions League match where they led twice for the third time, and for the first time at their home ground. All these instances were against Real Madrid, occurring previously in September 2012 and April 2024. This defeat also marked City's first loss in a Champions League game where they led at half-time since April 2018 against Liverpool, ending an unbeaten streak of 32 matches.

Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration after the match, stating, "We arrived at the last minute with a result, and we could not keep it." He mentioned similar occurrences against teams like Feyenoord and Brentford, highlighting a recurring issue of conceding late goals. "Unfortunately, it has happened so many times," he added.
The Citizens have struggled to maintain leads this season in the Champions League. They have failed to win any of their last four games where they scored first. These matches include encounters with Sporting CP, Feyenoord, Paris Saint-Germain, and now Real Madrid. Additionally, City have conceded seven goals in the final 15 minutes of their Champions League matches this season.
City defender John Stones acknowledged that players need to take responsibility for these lapses. "As the manager says, we need to look at ourselves and take accountability," Stones stated. He emphasised that despite starting strong against Real Madrid, they must improve their performance as a team on the pitch.
Guardiola also stressed collective responsibility for these setbacks. "I don't have a problem accepting," he said. "To blame one specific player is ridiculous. It's all of us, me first." He noted that while players are committed and hardworking, stability during crucial moments remains an issue.
City face an uphill battle as they prepare for their trip to Bernabeu next Wednesday. With their hopes hanging by a thread after this defeat, maintaining focus and improving stability will be crucial if they aim to overturn Real Madrid's advantage.
