Manchester City have been charged by Premier League for breaking financial regulations over a nine-season period.

The Manchester-based club are now referred to an independent commission over their breaches of the rules from the 2009-10 to 2017-18 season. Premier League conducted a four-year-long investigation and now has sanctioned the reigning Premier League champions.

City have been accused by the Premier League of not providing accurate financial information, "in particular with respect to its revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs".

They are also charged with properly not disclosing managerial remuneration for a four-year period, during the 2009-10 to 2012-13 season when Italian manager Roberto Mancini was at the helm.

They also didn't provide accurate information on profit and sustainability from 2015 to 2018. City are also being alleged by the Premier League to not compl with UEFA's regulations for club licensing and financial fair play from the 2013-14 to 2017-18 season.

"The proceedings before the commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private. Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the commission's final award will be published on the Premier League's website," a Premier League statement wrote.

"This confirmation is made in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1. The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice," it added.

Man City won their 6th league title last season followed by their acquisition by the Abu Dhabi United group in 2008. They were also banned from European competitions for two years for breaching FFP regulations in February 2020. The sanction was retracted by CAS in the month of July the same year.
