Bernardo Silva Addresses Manchester City's Club World Cup Exit And Its Implications For Domestic Season

Bernardo Silva expresses disappointment over Manchester City's exit from the Club World Cup, emphasising the team's ambition and readiness for the Premier League season ahead.

Bernardo Silva has dismissed the notion that Manchester City's early exit from the Club World Cup might benefit their domestic season. City were eliminated after a 4-3 loss to Al-Hilal, with Marcos Leonardo scoring the decisive goal in extra time. Despite dominating Group G with wins over Al Ain and Juventus, they fell short in the last 16.

City's performance saw them achieve an expected goals (xG) total of 4.35 from 30 shots, compared to Al-Hilal's 3.16 from 17 attempts. Their focus now shifts to the Premier League, starting against Wolves on August 16 for the 2025-26 season opener. An extended break could have been possible if they reached the final, but Silva insists no one desired more time off.

Silva Discusses City’s Club World Cup Exit

"No one wanted to lose, no one wanted more vacations," Silva stated. "We are very used to not having holidays, unfortunately, because the schedule is crazy. But when we are in a competition we take it very seriously and we had a lot of ambition for this Club World Cup and we wanted to win it."

Silva compared their exit to being knocked out of the Champions League, acknowledging a similar disappointment. At 30 years old, he expressed uncertainty about how much rest the team would get but remained confident in their readiness for the Premier League title challenge after losing it to Liverpool last season.

"We don't know [the schedule] yet," Silva mentioned. "We know when we start the Premier League, we will try to have as much rest as possible but also come back to prepare for the season properly." He emphasised that preparation is primarily the responsibility of the manager and staff.

The team aims to use whatever time they have efficiently before returning to training. Silva stressed their commitment to preparing thoroughly for the upcoming season, regardless of whether it's two or three weeks of rest.

Despite their early exit from international competition, Manchester City remains focused on reclaiming domestic glory. The squad is determined to bounce back and compete fiercely in the Premier League.
