Pep Guardiola acknowledged Manchester City's lack of sharpness in attack after their 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool. Despite having more attempts on goal, City struggled to convert their chances. First-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool 11 points ahead of second-place Arsenal. City's expected goals per shot were low, indicating poor quality opportunities.
Guardiola discussed his strategy against the league leaders, admitting City needed to be more clinical at the Etihad Stadium. "We played very good. Maybe we missed more productivity in the shots but we played against a fantastic team," he told Sky Sports. He noted that while they reached the final third often, they failed to score due to Liverpool's strong defence.

In the second half, Guardiola's team faced a deep defensive line from Liverpool. The tactic was to push them into their box and attempt to break through there. However, City couldn't find the finishing touch needed for success. Guardiola mentioned that crossing was ineffective due to Liverpool's physical advantage.
This loss marks Guardiola's tenth defeat against Liverpool, making them his most challenging opponent in his coaching career. Despite this being only his second loss at the Etihad against them in all competitions, it highlights a significant gap between City and the league leaders.
The defeat leaves City fourth in the standings, trailing Liverpool by 20 points. This is the largest gap since July 14, 2020, when City last failed to win the title as Liverpool claimed victory. Guardiola admitted that his team is far from where they need to be but remains optimistic about their future prospects.
Guardiola expressed confidence in City's potential despite current challenges. "I saw many things that this club has a bright future with the players that we have," he said. With most players being young except Kevin de Bruyne and possibly Nathan Ake, he believes there's a promising future ahead.
He emphasised building for upcoming seasons while acknowledging some older players will remain next year. Even with absences affecting performance, Guardiola praised his team's personality and past achievements but recognised they are currently distant from top form.
