Manchester City Must Enhance Strategy To Utilise Erling Haaland Effectively Amid Struggles

Pep Guardiola stresses the importance of optimising Erling Haaland's role as Manchester City faces a challenging period with poor performance and injuries.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes the team must optimise their use of Erling Haaland to help him rediscover his scoring prowess. City have been struggling, with only one win in 12 matches across all competitions. Their recent woes were highlighted by a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, where Haaland had just one shot in the 90th minute, marking his sole touch inside the Villa box.

Haaland began the season impressively, netting 14 goals in 13 games across all competitions. He averaged a goal every 81 minutes and boasted a shot conversion rate of 23.3%. However, during City's recent slump, he has scored only four times in 11 appearances. His minutes-per-goal ratio has dropped to 248, and his shot conversion rate has fallen to 9.8%.

City Need to Better Use Erling Haaland

After the defeat at Villa Park, Haaland admitted he hadn't been performing well lately. Guardiola, however, emphasised that the team's poor run was a collective issue. "It's about us, it's not just about one player," Guardiola stated. "When Erling was so prolific, it was about us, the team. Erling is so important for us and will be so important for us. We need to use him better."

Guardiola pointed out that various factors have contributed to their struggles this season. "Many little details and big details make us not as good as we were," he explained. Injuries have plagued City this term, with key players like Rodri, Oscar Bobb, and Ruben Dias sidelined. Ederson and Matheus Nunes are also doubtful for their upcoming Boxing Day match against Everton.

The return of John Stones from a foot injury provided some relief for City during their trip to Villa Park. However, Stones was substituted at half-time and is now likely to miss the match against his former club Everton. Guardiola commented on the situation: "We will see how many players we have available. Right now, I do not know."

Guardiola acknowledged that he had yet to consult with the medical team regarding Stones' condition but noted that if Stones couldn't continue in the second half at Villa Park, it suggests he won't be ready for the next game.

City's current form is concerning for fans and management alike as they navigate through injuries and tactical adjustments. The focus remains on regaining momentum and ensuring key players like Haaland can perform at their best once more.
