Manchester City have finalised a €35 million deal to sell Joao Cancelo to Saudi Arabia amid Barcelona interest.
The Saudi Pro League club has reached an agreement with the Premier League side for the Portuguese full-back's transfer.
Joao Cancelo, once a key player for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, has seen his career take a downturn due to limited playing time. This led to a rift between him and Guardiola. The 30-year-old defender had a brief stint at Bayern Munich before joining Barcelona on loan last season.
But despite the interest from Blaugrana, it is Saudi giants Al Hilal who are pushing for Cancelo and a €35 million deal has been agreed between the clubs.
During his loan spell at Barcelona, Cancelo made significant contributions, featuring in 42 matches and contributing nine goals. He played on both flanks and even as a right winger when needed. Despite Barcelona's initial interest in signing him permanently, financial constraints have made it unfeasible for them.
Barcelona's focus shifted towards strengthening their attack, leaving Cancelo's future uncertain. With three years left on his contract at Manchester City, he is unlikely to get playing time under Guardiola. This situation has prompted both the player and the club to seek an ideal destination for him.
Al Hilal have emerged as a potential destination for Cancelo. The Saudi Pro League club is already home to several big stars and aims to add more before the transfer window closes. Although Cancelo prefers staying in Europe, a move to the Middle East could offer him a lucrative financial package.
The Portuguese defender's desire to leave Manchester City aligns with Al-Hilal's ambitions. The Saudi club has been negotiating with Manchester City and has successfully reached an agreement worth over €35 million for Cancelo's transfer.
Cancelo's impact at Barcelona was notable, but the Spanish giants could not afford him permanently. As Al Hilal steps up their pursuit, they hope to finalise the deal soon.
This move marks another significant acquisition for Al Hilal as they continue to strengthen their squad. Al Hilal were the Saudi league champions last season and will be looking forward to replicate that this season as well.
